Mr Ed, SummitCachers, and a grand view of Turquoise Lake and Mt. Massive, and a relic mine structure, all from the cache location.
You can drive to the location in any car or even on a bicycle.Elizabeth McCourt, or "Baby Doe" as she would best be remembered, would marry one of the wealthiest men in the country... Horace Tabor, Leadville, Colorado's most prominent Silver King. In doing so, she became a part of one of the country's most famous celebrity love triangles.
Horace Tabor, some 25 years her senior, fell in love with Baby Doe almost instantly, and with her by his side, used his millions to build a legacy that fascinates the world to this day. Even after losing virtually everything, Baby Doe fought desperately to regain possession of and restore the production of the Matchless Mine, believing her husband's undying faith that the Matchless Mine would produce again. She died of heart failure, and was found frozen and penniless on March 7, 1935, on the floor of her cabin at her beloved Matchless Mine.
It is in her honor that the Treasure of Bay Doe cache is named.
The cache is located on Iron Hill, east of Leadville. You can drive right to it on good dirt roads. You could even ride a mountain bike to it! Once there, enjoy the view of Turquoise Lake and Mt. Massive, one of the 54 peaks in Colorado over 14,000'. But don't be fooled! Iron Hill is a popular tourist trek to see and photograph wonderful relic mining buildings, a real glimpse of Leadville's famous mining past. Because of chance of accidental discovery or vandalism, the cache is not visible, hence the chosen level of difficulty. Please be sure to leave it in the same way when you leave.
The cache contains a deck of cards, a box of colored pencils, loose-neck Watch Turtle, Bridge - Backgammon CD, 3-piece tool set, Powerpuff Girl doll, Happy Face pencil, carabiner key ring, plastic compass (for drawing circles), penlight flashlight, pencil sharpener, and the Big Haul travel bug. There is a log and mechanical pencil in a ziploc bag.
07/01/2019 By fishercacher A lot has changed in 17 years - not so sure I'd drive my vehicle up this road - certainly 4x4s only, as the rocks and washouts make this more suitable for hiking. Made the hike and then searched carefully and came up with the cache. All is well here!
09/18/2018 By J&J Team Yukon Greetings from Oklahoma. Last week of a month long cache trip to Colorado. Drove over from Avon for a day of caching. We parked car and walked about a 1/3 miles up to mine. Found the cache quickly and then explored the area and took pictures. Hard life the miners endured. Finding a good variety of caches. TFTH
08/28/2018 By Geo-Adventurer Spent a little off-time from guiding visiting some mining areas East of Leadville. Mostly 4X4 roads in this area with great vistas and postcard perfect views of mining the history in this area of Colorado - simply beautiful. TFTC! :-)
