NGS Benchmark series.
I wanted to make a series to show geocachers more of our nation's benchmarks. Though they can be found in every county in the continental U.S. benchmarks are are just another little known survey tool to the public. But when you look on the NGS site or Geocaching.com you can see every detail about them. There is also description for each that tells exactly where they are. These descriptions interest me the most, at times you have to wonder where in the world did the railroad track go that was 50 feet from a certain benchmark years ago. I hope that this series gives a historical insight to geocachers of what our country looked like in the years past.

JK0411
Location: Teller County, CO
Designation: P 290
Marker Type: Bench mark disk
Setting: Set into the top of a round concrete monument
Stability: May hold, but type commonly subject to service motion

Documented History (by the NGS)

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1951 2.2 MI NW FROM CRIPPLE CREEK. 2.2 MILES NORTHWEST ALONG STATE HIGHWAY 143 FROM THE COURTHOUSE AT CRIPPLE CREEK, 150 YARDS NORTH OF A CURVE IN THE HIGHWAY, 48 FEET WEST OF THE WEST BANK OF A SMALL STREAM, 60 FEET EAST OF THE CENTER LINE OF THE HIGHWAY, 18 FEET SOUTHEAST OF THE EAST END OF AN 18 INCH PIPE CULVERT, 3 FEET SOUTH OF A WITNESS POST, SET IN THE TOP OF A CONCRETE POST WHICH PROJECTS 0.8 FOOT ABOVE THE GROUND.

----------

This is a pretty easy cache at the posted coords. The benchmark is about 40 feet to the east. Not that hard to find even with the tall grass in the area.

My brother stopped to call home and noticed that this one was 79 feet away, so I made a run for it. Thanks for the cache.

Went on an early morning trip to Cripple Creek so decided to grab a few caches along the way. I'm glad I came here in the middle of the night so there was no traffic to contend with. Made the find and signed log without any issues. TFTC!!!
