CONGRATULATIONS TO A & J - Adrift FOR THE FTF!!

This cache is placed on a promontory just northwest of the summit of Point 13,832, one of Colorado’s Centennial Peaks.  Centennials are mountains that are amongst the highest 100 peaks in our state.  As more hikers and climbers complete the 54 14ers, some of them redirect their focus to the 46 Centennial 13ers, such as this one. Point 13,832 has been given no official name by the USGS and is identified by its elevation, 13,832 feet above MSL. It is the 90th highest peak in Colorado. The easiest approach is via the Silver Creek Trail.

The cache is a brown plastic container hidden in a field of rocks and covered by small rocks for concealment and protection from small animals.  It will require dedicated searching.  You might want to review and print out the spoiler photo and have it with you. Have fun on your hike and keep searching until you have this baby in your hands! Several hours are necessary to reach Point 13,832, make the search, and return to parking, so go prepared.

Hiking with WingsAndTales - we had good weather and did a little through hike along the ridge. Quite the beat down trail here now, compared to thirty years ago...

COpackrat and I looked at multiple ways to get to this cache and it's partner to the east. None of the possible routes are short or easy. We had done the Sunshine and Redcloud combo a couple days prior and decided to try something different for these. We left one of our cars at the Wilson Creek TH the night before and camped at the Silver Creek TH. We knew it was a similar distance to the out and back from Silver Creek but hoped to save some elevation gain and see different scenery in the process. My GPS registered 13+ miles and 4400' of elevation so it didn't save us as much as I had hoped. A few hundred feet of the elevation gain was on the lower part of the Wilson Creek trail where it goes up and down next to a stream to avoid beaver ponds. It did get us off the ridge sooner so if the weather is an issue it might be a better choice.

Once we got to GZ we searched a bit and then pulled out the spoiler photo. Even with the photo it was tough to find but we weren't leaving until we signed the log. TFTC

Met ernie66 for our annual San Juan hike. I know these mountains have been here for a very long time, but if it weren’t for Denali41’s caches, I’m fairly sure I wouldn’t be hiking them…at least not at this time. That would be a pity. Two years ago we hiked Redcloud and Sunshine and I was so impressed with the beauty of this area that I was eager to go back. We looked forward to parting from the maddening crowd on their way to Redcloud and eagerly headed to 13,832. It’s fitting that A & J Adrift had already claimed the FTF on this one and its partner cache. I was hoping for some sort of input or clue in their logs to let us know what kind of shape/condition we needed to be in to summit these two, but they leave it up to your personal experience.

Our GPSers clocked us at exactly 14 miles roundtrip, and an elevation gain of 4,700 . Not sure about Roach’s stats at this point, but he appears to continually be a bit off on the mileage. He wrote that this one was 12.6, so not a big difference. In any case it was a tough way to start the proposed 5 caches we hoped to accomplish in a couple of days. We are mostly always lucky with the weather and once again this worked in our favor.

The wildflowers were simply amazing along Silver Creek on the way up. Estes01 and I encountered 2 or 3 other groups of hikers on the ascent, but they all turned right at the ridge, heading up to Redcloud. Turning left instead, we met no other hikers until after we returned to the junction. The 13ers are among our favorites - less popular but just as rewarding. From here, we continued on to Point 13,811. Adding a favorite point, thank you!
