The cache is a decon container. It is not winter friendly. This is one of the caches in a series of caches dedicated to Fallen Flag railroads. Fallen Flags are those railroads that no longer exist either through abandonment or corporate takeover. With each cache will come a short history lesson explaining a little something about the railroad.
DSP&H are the initials of the Denver, South Park, and Hilltop railroad. It was a narrow gauge line (3’ between the rails) that ran between Hilltop Junction (about 3/4 mile south of Fairplay) and the town of Leavick, a distance of about 11 miles.
Leavick was the end of the line for the railroad. To get here, grades as high as 5.85% (5.85' of rise per 100' of horizontal distance) had to be negotiated and that was just about the practical limit for rod locomotives. To get to the silver mines, grades as high as 12% would be required. Leavick was the shipping point for the ores from the Peerless, Dauntless, and Hilltop mines, to name a few. This branch operated 42 years from 1896-1938.
09/01/2018 By ejworth Quick grab on the way down the mountain when I realized I missed it going up. Did not park in a good place for as we got back to the truck we found a flat tire. Guy from the silver mine next store came down and helped us. So nice. great area and so glad we got to stop and enjoy the great views.
