The Puzzler

hartsdale got the FTF

Time to step up my caching game.

The cache is not at the posted coordinates. Solve the puzzle to find the actual coordinates.

Car Talk was a weekly call-in radio show that ran on NPR from 1977 to 2O12. It was hosted by Tom and Ray Magliozzi, known also as "Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers". They dispensed “lousy car advice” along with relationship advice. Tom Magliozzi died in November of 2014.

Some NPR stations still carry reruns of Car Talk Episodes, and episodes can also be downloaded as podcasts.

A feature of each episode was The Puzzler which consisted of some sort of riddle. The audience was invited to send in solutions and the winner was announced the following week. This cache was inspired by one of the Puzzlers. You could download and listen to every episode of Car Talk. That may or may not help solve this puzzler. It will definitely keep you entertained.

OK, so here is the Puzzler. Now pay attention! The solution is well obfuscated:

A hundred and five geocachers are each locked in a cell with three pirates, one of whom will walk the plank in the morning. Each geocacher has 1O bottles of wine, one of which has been poisoned, and each pirate has 12 geocoins, one of which is counterfeit and weighs either more or less than a genuine coin. In each cell there is a single switch which each geocacher may either leave as is or flip. Before being led into the cells each geocacher is made to wear either a red hat or blue hat. Each geocacher can see half the other geocachers' hats but not his own. Meanwhile, outside of the priSon but within view of exactly half of the cells, a 6-digit prime number of monkeys multiply until their number is a factor of pi. Then all the monkeys have to get across a shark infested river using a leaky canoe that can hold at most two monkeys at a time, but half the monkeys always lie, half always tell the truth, and half claim to be homicidal maniacs and will kill any other monkey if left alone with it. Given that the nth geocacher knows that one of the monkeys doesn't know that a pirate doesn't know the product of two numbers between 1 and 38 without knowing whether the nth plus one geocacher has flipped a switch in his cell or not, and after having determined which bottle of wine was poisoned, what color his hat was, which coins are counterfeit, which pirates will walk the plank, and which monkeys were killers, how did he arrive at the cache coordinates? More importantly, what are the coordinates?

I tried to solve this when it was first published, looked at the numbers and made a half hearted try...and gave up.
Next I used the hint and looked at what I was supposed to see but again gave up...tired eyes.
Then I forgot about it until last night and decided to take another stab. I was determined this time and came up with the answer. Signed the log today, left a dolphin magnet and discovered the geocoin. Need another hint?: Pgey+S.
Loved the car talk guys, they had good advice and always made me laugh.
And no, I'm not going to make you walk the plank!

Hmmmm ….. This is a long.... story. Started out on the right track, then things became quite obfuscated. Spent two weeks twisting and turning this everyway I could think. Disappointed my nephew from California because I couldn't deliver on a promise to solve this before he came back for a second visit. Today I sat down and went back to the beginning. How did I miss the obvious???? Then I followed the bread crumbs to the right SOURCE. Success at last. Now, where's that PLANK!!! TFTC.

I drive by this one every Friday on my route. Today I had a little extra time to stop and sign the log. Clever puzzle! I finally found the RIGHT source to get this one solved. Signed the log and I'm off to my next stop. [8d][8d] SL TFTC

I solved a bunch of puzzles in this area before heading out here from Chicago while on a family vacation. Today, my wife and our older children went rafting, but our 4-yo was too young to go so we spent the morning geocaching in Canon City. No problems with the find here; apparently I missed the FTF by a matter of minutes LOL...TFTC!

FTF!

There is a very long story to go with this one and the next time I see you I will fill you in.

Anyway, I figured out the puzzle and plugged it in and it said " CORRECT ".

This morning I jumped on my scooter and went for a fun ride to look for this container.

Thanks for another fun puzzle cache to hunt for!

Grabbed the very nice Prize, Thank You Very Much!

Left a couple of trackables and grabbed yours.
