This 19th century cabin, known as Roberts Cabin, is one of the last vestiges of early settlements in the area known as Tarryall and Hamilton. The town of Tarryall developed as one of the first mining communities in South Park when gold was discovered in Tarryall Creek in 1859. The town was soon hosting hundreds of miners, but conflicts arose and some went across the creek and settled their own town known as Hamilton. In 1860, both Tarryall and Hamilton received their post offices, predating nearby Como and the eventual county seat of Fairplay. Like most towns in South Park, Tarryall and Hamilton were subject to the booms and busts of the mining industry and when the placer mines played out, the towns were abandoned. Today, most of the towns’ sites have been lost due to dredging but the Roberts Cabin is still available for recreational use.

Follow the only paved road through Como (Boreas Pass Road/County Road 33) for approximately 4 miles until you see the sign for the cabin on the right. Park on the road so as not to disturb anyone staying at the cabin.

We pulled over in our descent from the Pass. We made the grab quickly, but probably not quickly enough for the renters of the house, who likely wondered what we were doing outside the house where they were staying. TFTC.
