CONGRATULATIONS TO TEAM DENNIS ON THE FTF!

The Warren E. Wurtz Ditch (aka Wurts Ditch) directs water from Bennett Creek and  Mitchell Creek (tributaries of the Eagle River) across the Continental Divide into West Tennessee Creek for delivery into the Arkansas River.  It’s annual flow involves about 2,070 acre-feet, making the Wurtz Ditch the 13th highest carrier of trans-basin diversions in Colorado. Transmountain Diversions (TMDs) are water transfers across the Continental Divide from the state’s wetter Western Slope to the drier, more populated Front Range communities.  Roughly 80% of Colorado’s precipitation occurs in western portions of the state, while 80% of the population resides along the base of the Front Range.  Water carried by the ditch was decreed on October 3, 1936, with an appropriation date of June 8, 1929.  The City of Pueblo owns the appropriation.

The cache container is a large-sized medicine pill vial that has been wrapped with camo tape. It’s hidden in a crack in a rock, covered by smaller rocks and some sticks.  It is placed well above the northern side of the Wurtz Ditch, a short distance into the Atlantic side of the Continental Divide.  Have fun in accessing it.

Greetings from Oklahoma. We are on our last week of caching for a month in different areas in Colorado. We are in Avon this week so made the drive over to find some nice interesting caches. Our GPS would not settle down on this one so had to just start searching. Soon had cache in hand. Very cool area. Thanks for the adventure!

Out with Geowife picking up a few north of Leadville. Hadn't been in this area before, glad you brought me out here. At first I thought this might be hard to locate but the coordinates are right on. Cache in great shape. TFTF

Returned today to place cache in the area. Found it. Still in tact and dry. Interesting rock formations. We couldn't help but take several photos of the rocks to send to a geologist friend to inquire how they were formed. Signed the log. TFTC

Were in the area 4 wheeling and hiking to Slide Lake. We searched on the way out, only having the waypoints and no description. We will be back in the area within a week and will search again. The weather today was blowing in, so we wanted to get back to the Jeep. Fascinating info about the Wurtz Ditch. This is our first time in the area when there wasn't 3 ft of snow. Love seeing areas in all the seasons as they are so different.

We were in the area staying at one of the 10th Mountain Division Huts with a youth group & our horses to do some maintenance work on the Colorado Trail. After cutting a tree on the trail, the boys were checking out the extremely high water flow & waterfalls in Wurtz Ditch I had time to grab this cache. It was a steep dig from the trail up to GZ. All is in good condition. A fav point for a cache I could ride to.

Still too much snow for this one if you don't have boots. Will try again this summer.
