Lake Emma is a secluded retreat nestled amongst the highest mountains in South Park. To reach Lake Emma, you will pass through the mining history of the Alma Mining District and important sites such as Buckskin Joe, the Paris Mill, and the Sweet Home Mine. Buckskin Road travels higher and higher into the Mosquito Range until you reach Kite Lake, a popular trailhead for hikers hoping to climb four Fourteeners in one day. Although the Kite Lake Trailhead is crowded throughout the summer you will likely find solitude while hiking the less frequented trail to Lake Emma, as outlined in this brochure by the Mosquito Range Heritage Initiative.

Headwaters of Buckskin Creek at Lake Emma

From Highway 9, take Buckskin Road (county road 8) west as far as your vehicle is capable of going. There are some pull outs along the road but if you make it the 6 miles to Kite Lake you must pay $3 to park. From the Kite Lake Trailhead, follow the Lake Emma Trail up to the lake. Please note that although the hike from Kite Lake is short, this is at a high altitude with steep elevation gain. Take your time and enjoy the views from the top!

55Connie and I were originally going to take a drive. We then decided to drive up to the trailhead for Democrat Peak for a possible adventure next week. We met the maintenance man at our lodge and mentioned our plans for the day. He pulled out his cell phone and showed us pictures of his trek to bag Democrat Peak last Saturday...he also mentioned it only took four hours (round trip). Being as it was only a bit after 10 we decided to make it our goal for the day. We arrived shortly after 1130, there were clouds moving in and we heard thunder in the distance. We elected to make our trek of Democrat Peak another day. What to do now? We decided to hike to Emma Lake. We had an enjoyable day, saw a couple other hikers and someone fishing the lake. Great location for a geocache. Thanks for the placement.

TFTC! This was a very pleasant hike to a spectacular view...nobody around either. We still had to faithfully cross snow fields where the stream was running but otherwise it was beautiful. The lake is still halfway frozen over which made for crystal clear-blue coloration in the water.

We left a trackable coin that has already been to many places around the world.
