Begin by going to Bailey, Colorado and following Park County 43 until you can't go any further (a campground). Then go a little further to the trailhead for Rosalie/Tangelwood Trails. The trail is well maintained and used by horses often so it is rocky in places. It is a gradual incline so be prepared - you will gain roughly 375 feet in elevation. The entire trip is well above 9000' in altitude.
We have lived in Bailey for almost seven years now, and have been hiking its marked and unmarked trails for just as long. This is truly a beautiful area and we wanted to share it with others. Late in the winter of 2002 we started geocaching as a way to give our family hikes additional "purpose". Kodiak, who is half Black Lab and half St. Bernard, seems to have been born for this activity and just loves these adventures. After "bagging" several geocaches and helpng our eldest son's Boy Scout patrol hide their own geocache, we decided to plant one ourselves. This cache is in a beautiful area that is not heavily used, but is a favorite of horsemen and hikers alike. Though it is a constant uphill walk, this hike is suitable for all family members. Check out the trail on a map and you will be surprised as to where it goes up to!! Distance from trail head and elevation gain are estimates because my GPS kept losing its signal. This is the first time the tree cover has been dense enough to cause this to happen. Don't worry though, there are plenty of clearings to get new bearings in and the reception was good at the point of "hiding".

The cache is in a popcorn tin and is packed with alot of neat and varied items. We plan on placing a camera in the cache in the near future so we can record those who visit this cache. The initial items placed in the cache are:

Book - Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood
Book - Mensa Word Puzzles for Kids
Colorado Fishing Map
Oregon Ales key chain/bottle opener
Indian pot with candle
Brewers bumper sticker
Vibram Soles key chain
Brunton mini-compass
Tiger Beany Baby
Mother-of-Pearl bracelet
The Book of Virtues kids stories
Principles of Leave No Trace card
Tangerine soap bar
FYI Mardi Gras necklace

And: The Jimi Hendrix - - - Hendrix Groove Trave Bug!

The creek is currently running very swiftly due to the snow melt up above and the recent rains. In several areas along the hike you will see that little "falls" have been created. Right next to the spot we selected to hide the cache is one of these "falls". My eldest son decided to name the "falls" Kodiak Falls after our overly enthusiastic companion. Hope you enjoy the hike and the cache!

Gregg, Phyllis, Steven, Kevin, and the big guy - Kodiak

Sorry to say that "Kodi" (Kodiak our dog and for whom the cache and falls were named) passed away on 8/25/10. His hips had finally given out and he was unable to walk. The big guy will be missed for many reasons, one of which was his assistance with our geocaching adventures. But, this place and our username will carry on his memory for years to come!

 Hints

Approximately 1.25 miles from the parking are. Just off the trail between the trail and the creek. When the creek is running well, it creates a small "falls" by the geocache. Look under a large rock by a standing dead tree.

It was a beautiful day for a road trip. Piney woods and a burbling creek - what more could you ask for! Thanks, Kodiak's Family, for introducing me to this very nice hike. While signing the log, I sent love and smiles to all our departed canine friends. Thank you for keeping this oldie going and for the recent refurbishment.

I would not call this a ‘med’ as it is smaller than a film canister! Our smallest find yet! Tftf

We went for an after-Thanksgiving-meal hike this morning to walk the dogs and catch a few caches. I'm sorry to report this one is probably muggled. We found the spot where it should have been, but only a disarranged "suspicious pile of rocks" remains.

Sorry for the late post, but too much caching & not enough logging because I prefer to use my GPS & not my phone in areas where a signal is not guaranteed. This one was a challenge to find as there are many dead trees now in the area, but I finally got it. The road was closed at the campground due to flooding so that added to the hike as well as crossing the stream (very cold) at several places. I normally ride my horse up here & we do volunteer trail maintenance with my service riding organization. The trail is rocky because it used to be a road and goes straight up the fall line along the creek which causes it to wash the dirt out constantly revealing the rock base. It was doing just that while I was there. About 1/2 the trail was currently flowing with water out of the overflowing creek banks.

This cache was our goal today, as we love finding the bigger containers! We enjoyed the hike up, though the trail was very muddy and had many long sections of tributary running down the middle of it. Gotta love late spring in the higher elevations! This was a great place for our little guys to turn around on the hike. TFTC!

Dianne and I decided to hike to Rosalie Peak via the East Ridge and caught this cache on the way back down to the Deer Creek Trail head. We had to widen the search to find the cache. Dianne spotted this before I did. TN LN TFTC!

Had a nice trail ride to this cache. Have not been on this trail in awhile. The Tanglewood trail higher up is more rocky than I remember and was not so good for the horse and mule. Turned around and took Rosalie and a short way up there was a fallen tree that obstructed the trail for the equines. Had a shorter ride than expected, but a a good time anyway. TFTC!
