Cache near the old Clyde log flume

One section of the Clyde Timber Flume

This is one of the really interesting locations to hike to in the Pikes Peak area. It takes about an hour to hike up to the old timber flume used in the days when Clyde provided timber to the nearby mines. The flume is in amazing shape and goes for quite a distance up the mountain.

Please, please do not walk on the flume or take any artifacts from the vicinity. I have had this concern expressed to me and if this happens we may lose access to this beautiful and very interesting site.(It is illegal to remove artifacts from any historical site over 50 years old such as this one.)

The easiest way is to get to this cache is from old stage rd. (It's about the same time from 67 or from Colo Spr) You want to start hiking near the old Clyde town site (WP included) and just go north up the drainage. The old log road went up this way but there are only traces of a trail and the road. When we hiked this we went to the top of the ridge above the flume for some great views and then hiked down back to the road following the ridges to the east.

I didn't have time for this one last week when I did the caches above it so I came back today. I used the suggested route and it worked well. In places it's hard to believe that there was a road big enough to haul timber through there. I found it in places but totally lost it in others. Thanks for showing us a cool spot. TFTC

What a neat piece of history. The log was damp but otherwise in good shape. These are rare gems. Thanks for helping me find this artifact of our history.

We also came in from the top. We drove up 376 and parked at N38°46.228', W105°01.116' and went up and over the saddle. Since the cache was only like 1.2 miles away I foolishly thought we'd just scamper up there and get it. Also I neglected to bring water (idiot!). I also neglected to take into consideration the starting elevation of like 10.8K with the saddle like 500ft higher (nice view from there though BTW). At that point I was feeling great- the descent was challenging (Google Earth says max slope 57%) but we were getting close (under 200ft) when the iPhone suddenly got very confused and after about 20min it decided we were actually in New Mexico. It could be related to this?:
"18 May 2013 - G1 (Minor) Geomagnetic Storm conditions are now occurring due to the arrival of the CME from May 15, 2013. During G1 Geomagnetic Storm, weak power grid fluctuations can occur, minor impact on satellite operations is possible, aurora is commonly visible at high latitudes and migratory animals are affected at this and higher levels."
We must have been close to the flume when the GPS freaked out but we kept wandering downhill looking for water determined to see the flume at least, I realized later it must have been a dry flume unless they pumped water all the way up there? When the GPS came online we were .3mi below the cache. We did eventually find it and it was TOTALLY WORTH IT although the trek back to the car was fairly miserable without water. :-) TFTC!

Excellent cache! Thanks for pointing out this unique location. I approached from the ridge line above and didn't realize I was walking near the flume until nearing gz. I walked back up along the flume for about .16 miles till the flume eventually faded. Very cool. Thanks for the great cache, SL.
