Sometimes putting your nose or your rear-end in the corner can be a good thing! This is one of those times. This cache is located in the rock horn at the upper JQS switchback. There’s just enough room to park if you either nose in or back into the south wall of the turn. The cache is located up the road just a little, away from all the graffiti, at least for now. The cliff face and horn are made of shale’s. The darker, almost black shale’s, are Oil Shale. Give it a smell. While most rocks have no smell, oil shale gives of a pungent odor. If you get a real thin layer of real dark shale and hold it over a lighter, you can actually get the rock to light and start “melting” or turning to liquid syncrude. Be ready for the smell to intensify. Don’t try this inside your vehicle or home.
If you’re coming up the JQS or plan on going down, be prepared for the “drop” between this switchback and the next one down. I had to chain up to get passed it today, still covered in ice. Not a good place to slide to the east. Could end up down at the BLM water trough faster than you want to!
