This is near Tunnel 8 on the Shortline.

The Shortline, Colorado Springs & Cripple Creek District Railway, was built starting in 1897.  The last train ran on September 1, 1920. On August 29, 1922 the line was ordered sold under foreclosure of the first mortgage.  At the October 16th sale auction it was purchased by W. D. Corley for $370,000.   His purpose was to convert the roadbed into a toll road for automobile traffic.  It operated as such from July 14, 1924 until 1939 when he relinquished the toll road to the public and it became know as Gold Camp Road.

When I came to town in 1978 it was still possible to drive to Cripple Creek via the Gold Camp Road.
Due to tunnel cave-ins the portion of the road from just east of Tunnel 3 to a point just west of Tunnel 8 has been closed to vehicle traffic. It makes for excellent hiking though. It also makes a great area to hide caches. From the cache site are excellent views of Devil's Slide and Saint Peter's Dome.

I haven’t been on Gold Camp Road for quite some time, so it was good to get a chance to return and try to pick up a few caches. I was surprised how crowded the road was, I suppose it is because of the Memorial Day Weekend kick-off. I wanted to give this one a try because it had a good difficulty rating, terrain rating, and looked fun. Besides the nice location, snow and ice definitely kept this one exciting and me on my toes…fortunately my toes and not my fourth point of contact. Thanks to the CO for placing this nice cache for everyone to find, TFTC.

Here from KY visiting my daughter and finding some caches. I was just passing by, so I made the quick hike over to this interesting spot. Great views, also! Thanks for bringing me here!

Was up at Bear Trap Ranch and decided to do some geocaching. Fun Hide but did you have to put it there. Near the mouth of the tunnel would have been just fine ;o). TFTC SL

There are really nice views on the way to the cache. It was a perfect fall day. It can't be too much longer before we get snow up here. TFTC
