I'm always on the lookout for a nice view on the way as I'm hiking. This spot fit the bill nicely as I was hiking a back route toward the upper loop in Cheyenne Mountain State Park and is only 1/4 mile from parking! The granite rock outcroppings towering over the creek are over 2 billion years old (and look it). When searching for the cache, appreciate the view but be mindful of that last step!
Ok, what about this "back route"? No need to pay $7 for a park day pass if you're just going to the Upper Loop. From parking, it's about an hour hike to the loop, 3 miles around, then an hour back. Way easier than the 18 mile round trip it would be starting in the Park! Pay attention to the map and you can cut at least a mile off the road distance if you're hiking and willing to do some light bushwhacking.
The cache is a small plastic container large enough for most TB's. Thanks to estes01 for the container... she had shared this container for a cache we placed in the State Park a few weeks ago which didn't get approved because it was too far from the trail. I returned today to set things straight. The cache is now on National Forest land -- you'll have to cross a gate meant to keep vehicles out but hiking is allowed (and bicycling too, I think).
