Crow's Nest

CROW’S NEST

THE CROW WAS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE EARLY SAILOR’S NAVIGATION EQUIPMENT. THESE LAND LUBBING FOWL WERE CARRIED ON BOARD TO HELP THE NAVIGATOR DETERMINE WHERE THE CLOSEST LAND LAY WHEN THE WEATHER PREVENTED SIGHTING THE SHORE VISUALLY. IN CASES OF POOR VISIBILITY, A CROW WAS RELEASED AND THE NAVIGATOR PLOTTED A COURSE CORRESPONDING WITH THAT OF THE BIRD’S, BECAUSE IT INVARIABLY HEADED TOWARD LAND. THE CROW’S NEST WAS SITUATED HIGH IN THE MAIN MAST WHERE THE LOOKOUT STOOD HIS WATCH. OFTEN, HE SHARED THIS LOFTY PERCH WITH A CROW OR TWO SINCE THE CROW’S CAGES WERE KEPT THERE: HENCE THE “CROW’S NEST.”

Got an early start on hiking in Greenland Open Space before the heat of the day. This was the first of the caches we found. All good with the cache. Thanks for the fun.

Found it. Wouldn’t want to do this on a really hot sunny day. Kind a cool finding some really old grave markers. Tftc

We had to bushwhack through some scrub oak. Beautiful views from the site! We really liked this location! Thanks for bringing us up here. There are no more puzzle pieces left in the container. Otherwise everything is in good shape. We'll e-mail the CO and put in a maintenance request. Left TB for the next cacher. Tftc.

After banging out Tom.Dogs cache I decided to make for this one, hard to say no to the Maritime History Series (btw, you need to put puzzle pieces in or send out the answer). Hike was pretty easy other than the fact I was in bike clothes (shoes, short, and jersey) so a little harder to move through the terrain, especially the shoe part (bike shoes, the one plus is mine are for mountain bike courses). Cache itself was in great shape other than no clues (second hint). Appreciate the placement.

I wish I had a crow's nest to help me navigate through this nasty reef of scrub oak!! Great location, nice hike! The cache is in good shape but there are no more puzzle pieces. I'll message c/o to see if I can get a soft copy. TFTC!
