Sea Chanties

SEA CHANTIES

SEA CHANTIES WERE SONGS SUNG IN THE DAYS OF SAIL BY CREWS AS THEY WORKED AT HEAVING THE LINES OR TURNING THE CAPSTAN. THE SONGS’ RHYTHMS CAUSED EVERYONE TO PUSH OR PULL SIMULTANEOUSLY, HENCE CAUSING A CONCERTED EFFORT AND BETTER RESULTS. SOME BELIEVE THE TERM IS A DERIVATION OF THE FRENCH WORD “CHANTER” WHICH MEANS “TO SING” OTHERS MAINTAIN THE SPELLING SHOULD BE “SHANTIES,” CLAIMING THE NAME REFERS TO THE SHANTIES ALONG THE MOBILE, AL. WATERFRONT WHERE MANY OF THE TUNES WERE LEARNED BY SAILORS. WHATEVER THE ORIGIN, CHANTIES WERE DIVIDED INTO THREE DISTINCT CLASSES. SHORT-DRAG CHANTIES, USED WHEN A FEW STRONG PULLS WERE NEEDED; LONG-DRAG CHANTIES, LONGER SONGS TO SPEED THE WORK OF LONG-HAUL JOBS; AND HEAVING CHANTIES, USED FOR JOBS REQURING CONTINUOUS ACTION SUCH AS TURNING THE CAPSTAN. ONE MAN, THE CHANTY-MAN, STOOD HIGH ABOVE THE WORKING CREW AND SANG THE MAIN LINES WHILE THE REST OF THE CREW ADDED THEIR VOICES STRONGLY ON THE SECOND LINE. ON THE LAST WORD, A COMBINED PULL MADE THE ROPES “COME HOME.” A GOOD CHANTY-MAN WAS HIGHLY PRIZED BY OFFICERS AND CREW ALIKE. ALTHOUGH HE HAD NO OFFICIAL TITLE OR RATE, HE WAS USUALLY RELIEVED OF ALL DUTIES TO COMPOSE NEW VERSES FOR SEA CHANTIES.

Picked this nice cache up while geo-running around the Mt. Herman area. I approached this one from MT Herman road. Although not a long hike, it was tricky. Although I tried to follow goat trails the best I could, there was still bushwhacking and some navigation challenges penetrating a belt of boulders. To add to the challenge, a hailstorm started; accompanied by thunder. Not a good scenario with metal hiking polls while looking for a metal ammo can. Fortunately, both conditions cleared before I reached GZ. At GZ I made a quick find and the container is still in great shape. Heading down was significantly easier, as I could better see and follow natural lines of drift and goat trails. Thanks to the CO for placing this nice cache for everyone to find, TFTC.

Thanks for the cache! After work CrumbCrunchers and I decided to head up this way for a quick hike. We started with the DGS cache nearby and bee-lined it for this cache. Worked out well, as the route wasn't too bad. We followed a couple deer trails, climbed over a few rocky areas. Nice hike all in all. Found the cache in great condition. Signed and stamped and replaced as found. Snapped some pictures and had to high-tail it down the mountain as we were losing light quickly. Finally hit the road down below just as it became dark. Fun hike with a good friend! She's a trooper that puts up with me when I say lets go for a hike! Smile. Thanks for placing this fun series of caches and hikes! I've enjoyed all of them so far!

2nd maritime cache today. Met up with RPieperco to take a hike after work. We came up from the dgs cache so the hike wasn't too bad. Coming down we started running out of daylight, but we made it back just as we lost the rest of the light. Cache is in good shape. Sl, thanks!

This one had not been found in over two years but it still in perfect condition. Had found Creature Feature to the North and had kept heading up, Wasn't long before there was no trail at all so had to decide whether to head straight back down or cut across to this cache which was only .4 mile. I should have gone straight back down. This was probably the toughest .4 of a mile I've ever done. Lots of rock and dirt scrambling mixed in with bashing through scrub oak. It got a little better closer to GZ though and the find was no problem. Then headed the .25 mile to the road which was much easier going.

Drug the teenagers out today for some caching. My son's girlfriend got a true glimpse what are family does for fun we drug her up the side of Mount Hermon.

Believe it or not I came to this one directly south from Creature Feature. I would not recommend it for anyone. It looks like you would just cross one large valley area but no, you cross large boulder fields, push through scrub oak & mountain mahogany, cross downed snags from the fire years ago only to run into yet another boulder field. Add to this plenty of snow up to 3' deep and this just over 1/2 mile distance! The whole way I was worried that snow might hamper my search but I continued on. Finally I got to GZ and took a look around at all the snow. I headed to a possible hiding spot thinking I had been foiled when all of a sudden I saw something just a bit suspicious, brushed off some snow & there was the cache. I am so glad to get this one crossed off the list-#6 of the nine done. I left some swag to celebrate. Now off to the next pirate cache further south.

I've done 7/9 in the series, and this cache is the HARDEST as far as terrain goes. There is no path, there is a LOT of underbrush, rocks to boulder (also slip and fall). I thought I was going straight up but after 20 mins of hard hiking up I found I was a quarter mile laterally from the cache.... going laterally is a lot worse than going up believe me.
Upon getting to the cache I found it easily and it has a gorgeous view! Unlike my shins right now, I suggest long pants.

This was my target-cache for today. I had to move fast to get up here before I hit my turnaround time, but I made it. Excellent hike up (and up, and up...) with some challenging obstacles along my route. Had a T-shirt on, my arms are in "excellent" condition now (yeah, not really). Overall, I think that this is probably my favorite find in the series so far. Loved the views from the cache, and the hiding spot. Just read 3 Williams Kidz log, didn't see a grave, but I could believe that something like that is near there. Have to look better next time. Only 5 left for the traditional caches, looking forward to finding more. Thanks for the great cache!

I was in the area today and my GPS said only 0.25 miles and I had an extra 10-15 minutes before I needed to go so off I went. The terrain started off uphill and it just go steeper! Needless to say, I exceeded by timeline. At least the trip back to the car was all down hill:) TFTC.
