Scuttlebutt

SCUTTLEBUTT

THE ORIGIN OF THE WORD “SCUTTLE BUTT,” WHICH IS NAUTICAL PARLANCE FOR A RUMOR, COMES FROM A COMBINATION OF “SCUTTLE”, TO MAKE A HOLE IN THE SHIP’S SIDE CAUSING HER TO SINK, AND “BUTT”, A CASK OR HOGSHEAD USED IN THE DAYS OF WOODEN SHIPS TO HOLD DRINKING WATER; THUS THE TERM “SCUTTLEBUTT” MEANS A CASK WITH A HOLE IN IT. “SCUTTLE” DESCRIBES WHAT MOST RUMORS ACCOMPLISH, IF NOT TO THE SHIP, AT LEAST TO MORALE. “BUTT” DESCRIBES THE WATER CASK WHERE MEN NATURALLY CONGREGATED, AND THAT’S WHERE MOST RUMORS GET STARTED. THE TERMS “GALLEY YARN” AND “MESS DECK INTELLIGENCE” ALSO MEAN THE SPREADING OF RUMORS AND MANY, OF COURSE, START ON THE MESS DECK.

It was a beautiful morning for a hike, so we decided to explore the scenic trails west of Palmer Lake. We hiked up from the lower reservoir to get the Sundance Mountain cache first, then continued west aong the "Backwoods Trail" until we got to the the Bearing Tree cache. We didn't go after the Backwoods #1 cache since it had a few recent DNFs by experienced cachers. The trails were snowpacked and icy so we were thankful that we had brought along our trekking poles. All containers and logs were in great shape. We grabbed a puzzle piece in hopes of someday going after the final. Thanks to all the COs for placing and maintaining these caches.

After the first 2 caches we hit the easy part of the trail. They seemed to pop up quickly on us. Found this one easily. Sl, thanks!

Yipee! I only have one more clue of this series to find to get to start figuring out how to solve the puzzle (which I may need help with looking at what I have so far). I started on this many many years ago & hope to get it finished before it disappears.

Thanks for the fun cache! I set off early this morning with Back Country Horseman, her pup and my two kiddos 3 and 5. We parked down below and made the trek up Sundance Mountain trail. Tough climb up and nearly broke the kiddos, but once up top they enjoyed the trail and finding all the caches with us. Each cache we found was in great condition! We signed and stamped all the logs. We made it as far back as the Ice Cave trail ending our adventure at The Baring Tree and turned around for the hike back. What a hot day! We were completely exhausted and headed to McD's for ice cream and refreshments! All said we clocked in at 4.9 miles over a 5 hour hike. So much fun! Thanks for placing these caches for us to enjoy!
