Scenic view  Significant hike

At a little over 12,000 feet elevation, this cache site is on the ridge between the headwaters of Oil Creek to the east and Horsethief Park to the west. From the parking area at the Horsethief Falls Trailhead, expect a strenuous hike with elevation gain of about 2,500 feet.

When placing the cache, I hiked up the Cairn Trail (704C) around the north side of Sentinel Point to Sentinel's Foot and Sentinel Point Cache, headed south down the ridge to place this cache, continued on to View from my Cabin, then descended straight down to Horsethief Falls, where I met the trail - about 8 miles round-trip.

I managed to pick this one up on the outbound leg of what I’ll call overnight Sentinel Loop+, taking the free / hard way. I’ve never been here before, so I appreciate the nice caches along the route to serve as my motivation. After a cold night near GC2M74H One-Mile Pinnacle and numerous morning misadventures that burned up way too much daylight around the Sentinel Point area, I was happy to finally be moving on this one. I’m really too embarrassed to discuss it, but I made a significant navigation error thanks to the crappy map display functionality of my Garmin GPS. If the CO ever wants to rename this cache, feel free to be inspired by me and call it “66 Mistakes to Get Here.” I was very happy to make the find and have all that drama behind me. From here I was passing GC1561D View from my cabin (injury limits my climbing) and heading straight down towards GCJTZJ Pancakes Anyone. I asked the CO in an email if that route was possible and he said it was. At the time, I didn’t think twice about his “good luck” comment, but after having gone down that way it seems to have better context.

Despite this is a 9 year old cache and no one has visited it for almost three years, the cache and log are in great shape. In fact they look brand spanking new, like they were just placed just yesterday. After a bad half day, the find and the added lonely stats were a definitive morale booster. Ugh, I should have waited 2 more days! With this find, I now have (counting only 1 year or more lonely) a total of 188 years, 3 months lonely time on 83 caches from 11 North American States & Provinces.

Thanks to the CO for placing this nice cache for everyone to find, TFTC.

We had to wait out a quick moving storm, but after that it was nice the rest of the afternoon.

Thanks for the cache!

The weather forecast for today was no storms. Unfortunately a quick storm passed just as Hartsdale and I approached this cache. I wasn't too fond of being above timberline during the thunderstorm as it pass overhead. I felt very exposed and was wishing I was significantly lower. All is well in the end. After the storm passed we signed the log and head on down. TFTC.

12:43:00 PM We are visiting from Dallas and staying in Divide for four weeks. I researched some hikes, based on popularity and, to a great extent, based on specific caches that would help me with various challenges and to fill in certain squares of the 81 grid. We tried progressively harder hikes. Last night the local news said no rain until 4, so we scheduled this hike to Sentinel Point for today. We started at the trrailhead for Horsethief Falls at 7:30, we took trail 704 and then 704C, then made our way south to Sentinel Point. I was definitely sucking wind at the top of that climb since I was "on the clock." Afterward we made our way south to the "saddle" and I was able to find this cache along the way. Great views from here, too. Then we headed down to the midpoint between the headwaters and the falls of Horsethief Falls and back to the car. We followed essentially the route you took, but didn't make it as far as View From My Cabin.

I signed the log. Thanks for the cache.

I'm finally back! Came here for an easy one after Sentinel Point. Took the north route except, instead of the more direct route along the boulders, which I've usually done, I went "straight" ahead (left). I don't recall taking this route before and it was well worth it for the cascading water and beautiful canyon.
