My first hide is dedicated to Gold Country and the people who wrestled the earth to extract a life from it and sometimes lost.
Nugget was a mining camp that sprung to life in the in the late 1890's west of the sister towns of Apex and American City in the Elk Creek Valley of the pine creek mining district. Though little of it now exists beyond the remains of the standing cabin that served as a mess hall for the miners of the Mackey mine located directly above the structure, the valley was once home to over 150 residents. A post office was opened up in 1895 but closed six years later. Never big enough to have its own school, the children had to walk up hill 2 miles to American City. Stories aboud here of men who faced severe winters where out of stavation they survived by eating their service animals and bullrushes dug from the frozen creek for weeks at a time.
Generally the Elk Park road can be driven by passenger car in the summer if you are careful, higher clearance and 4 wheel drive is recomended especially in spring time after the snow melts. Large rocks and deep ruts may be present. The area is completely inaccessible in winter time.
The Cache a short distance from the road up a designated hiking trail near the creek.
Im in the area quite often as I have my own mining claims nearby
