The actual Lodore cemetery is about 1/4 mile further down this road.... however, it's on the Brown's Park National Wildlife Refuge and I could not get them to respond to my request to place a geocache, so I did the next best thing... put it outside of the border! Now, I expect you to travel on down the road to see this very cool place... hey you came this far, you might as well, and there are some very nice vault bathrooms there!
The cemetery has about 30 graves and is located at the Old Lodore School which is on the registry of National Historic Places. There is a huge boulder at the corner of the cemetery which was moved from the mouth of Irish Canyon by the Moffat County Road Department. There are Indian petroglyphs on three of it's sides and on the fourth side, a plaque commerating Fort Davy Crockett - aka: Fort Misery or Fort de Misère. This fort was built somewhere in this valley (the actual site has never been verified) in 1837 by 3 mountain men (Thompson, Craig & Sinclair) and was a winter rendezvous for traders, trappers and Indians until after 1840 when it was abandoned. One famous visitor that mentioned it in his diaries was Kit Carson!
The Lodore Hall has acted as a community center for the area since 1910. Dances, funerals and community parties, including Christmas parties rumored to have been thrown by Butch Cassidy are example of the community event held here in additon to church and school.
The historic Two Bar Ranch - built by Thomas white in 1887 is nearby, by use caution when exploring this stie as it is very primitive and you are a LONG way from medical help! The Two Bar Ranch is known from the Bassett and Butch Cassidy time frame!
More information on all of these sites can usually be found in the brochure rack outside of the cemetery.
! The Exciting Cache Series!
"COLORADO SPIRIT QUEST"
REMEMBER:
If you are APPREHENSIVE about cemeteries – AVOID this series.
The Colorado Spirit Quest is a series of Caches placed by many individuals, near cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of paying respect to the many pioneer ancestors that have 'walked' before us.
If you are interested in being a part of this project, contact may be made by sending an e-mail to the owner of "Colorado Spirit Quest #1 – Mountain Passage". Use the 'Send Message" link at the center of the page of their profile.
There are hundreds of cemeteries in the rural and mountain communities across Colorado. This series will introduce you to many of them.
The cache pages will provide a virtual history tour of the cemeteries and tombstones.
The CSQ endeavor is an enormous and relentless task and will only flourish if there is a multitude of volunteer cachers willing to place these caches.
After locating the cache container, take some time to reflect back on the lives of those pioneers and the effort it took to make Colorado such a great state.
Each person that places a CSQ cache is responsible for its maintenance.
