This is a tribute to 3 Willams Kidz for their two movie series that we have enjoyed. In the off-season, we watched the movies and then we would hike to the caches during our time here each summer. For the Classic Movie series, almost every cache was on a hiking trail new to us.
Classic Movie series, starting with Casablanca
Classic Monsters series, starting with Dracula (1931)
I did notice that one particular classic movie was not included in the list: The Sound of Music. At five minutes under three hours long, I can see why. In fact, it is one of a very few movies with an intermission that I have ever seen. For this reason, both acts have their own puzzle cache.
Yet, it remains for me a sentimental favorite. I remember as a child my parents taking me to see the newly-released movie at the Highland Park Village Theater in Dallas after a spaghetti dinner nearby.
The Sound of Music is a 1965 American musical drama film produced and directed by Robert Wise, and starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, with Richard Haydn, Peggy Wood, Charmian Carr, and Eleanor Parker. The film is an adaptation of the 1959 stage musical, composed by Richard Rodgers, with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. The film's screenplay was written by Ernest Lehman, adapted from the stage musical's book by Lindsay and Crouse. Based on the 1949 memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria von Trapp, the film is about a young Austrian postulant who, in 1938, is sent to the villa of a retired naval officer and widower to be governess to his seven children. - Wikipedia
So, to quote 3 Williams Kidz:
“If you are willing to watch one of Hollywood’s finest classic movies, get your movie source ready, fire up the TV, maybe pop some popcorn, and have a pen and paper ready to answer the below questions, which YES -- ARE IN THE ORDER they are presented in the film. The questions should be EASY to answer as in these difficult times, the idea here is to just ENJOY the movie and then have the opportunity to get out and find a cache...”
This puzzle is for Act 2 of the movie. For the Act 1 puzzle, see GCACYTX - How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?, Act 1.
Act 2: The cache is located at North 38 AB.CDE West 105 VW.XYZ
Latitude:
A: The children are bouncing a ball with Baroness Elsa von Schraeder. They call out the number of the person to whom they will bounce the ball. What is the Baroness’ number?
If four, A=4; if six, A=5; if one, A=3
B: The Reverend Mother meets with Maria and tells her to return to the Von Trapp Family. She then sings, “Climb Every Mountain.” The song ends on what note? A high C, a Bb, a high A# or an E?
It is a high C, but that’s not part of the puzzle.
The Baroness is contemplating a wedding present for Georg. Which one is her SECOND idea?
If pajamas, B=4; if a villa, B=0; if a fountain pen, B=7; if a large yacht and a small boat for the bathtub, B=9
Before getting to the next question, a bit of trivia: During the wedding scene, the camera pans up from the altar. The Roman numerals MDCXXVI (1626) are seen. The groundbreaking of the current Salzburg Cathedral began in 1614 and was consecrated in 1628. Are the last two II hidden in this shot? No. The wedding was filmed in the Basilica of St. Michael in the Mondsee Abbey. In 1625, the abbey became a member of the Benedictine Austrian Congregation.
C: The Nazis stop the family as they are trying to sneak away from their home. As they then prepare to drive to the festival, two Nazi cars are seen. The license plate of the car on the left of the screen is D * 22 _ _.
Add the last two digits together for C.
D: After the Von Trapp Family Singers sing Edelweiss at the festival, Max gets up off of a cushion. What is the color of the cushion?
If red, D=1; if blue, D=7; if green, D=5; if gold, D=9.
E: The festival judge who hands to Max the list of winners is wearing a tall hat with a wide band. What is the color of the hat?
If red, E=1; if blue, E=7; if green, E=5; if gold, E=9.
Longitude:
V: The third place winner, Fraulein Schweiger, bows/nods five times before receiving flowers and eleven times after receiving the flowers. How many times does Max bow to her?
Subtract four from this number for V.
W: The second place winner is the Toby Reiser Quintet. What is the color of the woman’s dress?
If red, W=9; if blue, W=7; if green, W=6; if gold, W=8
Trivia: There was a real-life Austrian Volksmusik ensemble from Salzburg, directed by Tobi Reiser, founded in 1953, called the Tobi Reiser Quintet. A mere coincidence?
X: The Nazis pursue the Von Trapp family to the abbey. The officers, dressed in black, are in the first car. How many are wearing black uniforms?
If two, X=4; if three, X=6; if four, X=9; if one, X=0
Y: The Nazis have searched the graveyard of the abbey and left the area. Rolf lingers behind and catches the family as they come out of hiding. What color are the patches on the collar of Rolf’s uniform?
If red, Y=4; if blue, Y=9; if green, Y=7; if gold, Y=6
Z: In the closing credits, the next to the last credit is:
If Sister Margaretta, Z=9
If Sister Berthe, Z=1
If Sister Bernice, Z=7
If Sister Sophia, Z=4

Some trivia:
Kleinbusse am Mirabellplatz had provided six Volkswagen vans for director Bob Wise to transport his 250 stars and staff around for three months during the shooting. The company morphed into today’s Panorama Tours, doing two four-hour “Sound of Music” tours a day, every day, all year.
Leopoldskron Palace is where the lake scenes were shot. The palace’s Grand Ballroom was too narrow to film in, so it was meticulously copied and recreated in the 20th Century Fox studios in Los Angeles for the waltz scenes.
The fruit market where Maria tries to juggle two balls is still in the same spot.
The Salzburg Festival does indeed take place in the same theater where the von Trapp family wins first prize at the end of the film.
No, the Von Trapp family didn’t climb over the mountains to freedom like in the film; that would have taken them to Germany, not Switzerland.
Von Trapp Family trivia: After the war, the Von Trapp Family Singers toured the United States. They bought land in Stowe, Vermont, because it reminded them of Austria. They established the Trapp Family Lodge, which is still in existence today. Maria,Georg, and six children are buried in the cemetery there. They are survived by their youngest son, Johannes.
The Sound of Music (film) Wikipedia page has information about the locations and sets used in the film.
The cache is hidden in an area that reminds me of the opening sequence of the movie, when Maria sings, “The Hills Are Alive.” I hope you enjoy it. In the summer, there should be flowers here. You seek a camouflaged preform tube.
