Snailman1 has a nice series of "What Once Was" caches taking us to places that used to be in Colorado Springs. Here's another one that was a couple hundred years before my time but I've always enjoyed hiking through these tunnels.  I used to come here a lot as a child and now I get to relive the experience by taking my sons here.  It's fun to imagine the trains rumbling through here travelling between Colorado Springs and Cripple Creek.

WARNING! This involves scrambling up dangerous terrain. It may not be for everybody.

This is a 2-stage multi-cache near the old Midland Railroad tunnels.

First stage: What once was... An active railroad
Final stage: What once was... A tree

Be very careful if you choose to attempt this multi-cache

Logging with permission from the co. After an early start on the incline this morning it seemed too early to head home for the day. Lemonheadmafia suggested we explore the railroad tunnels. We found the first stage quickly and was in good shape. When I saw where the final was I almost didn't go for it. My legs were already spent from the incline, but I decided I couldn't quit when I was this close. Made it to the cache location but there was no container to be found. Emailed pictures for confirmation we were in the right spot. Thanks for a fun challenge!

Wow, that was fun! We parked in the dirt pull-out off Highway 24E, looked at the terrain on the way to stage 1, and promptly pulled our trekking poles out of the trunk. :o) We found the container at stage 1 pretty quickly and headed on to the final. Got within 50’, looked around, and we knew where the final had to be hidden! We made the find and signed the log. We slipped and slid our way back to the car. Fave point from us. Thanks for the challenging cache and to Ernie66 for replacing the container.

I returned to the old railroad bed again today for a walk and made my way to the final for this cache. With permission, I replaced the container so it should be good to go! Great location, TFTC!

Sorry for those who scrambled around looking for this one. Looks like it's gone missing. Disabling for now.

I parked in the legal area on the eastbound side of Hwy 24, crossed the creek on a log, and scrambled up to the old railroad bed. I found stage 1 and proceeded to stage 2, but despite a long search, could not come up with it. Thinking it might have fallen down the cliff, I went below and looked there, too. I'm afraid this one might be gone.
