Scenic view

Park at the end of Old Ranger Drive, which can be accessed from Elkhorn Ave. The UNC Old Man Mountain Retreat Center is located at the end of Old Ranger Drive. The cache is about 0.5 mile uphill. Follow the main trail.

When you get to the cache, you will have a 360 degree view! You can see Old Man Mountain, Deer Mountain, the Twin Sisters, Estes Park, the Stanley, lumpy ridge, Fall River Road, etc. You can scramble around this spot to see everything, or you can climb to the top of the rock at this location and see everything at once. But this requires climbing and is not required for the cache.

You can also 'visit' the summit of Old Man Mountain while you are here, if you are a good ascender. It may require climbing.

An impressive view of the area, nature, and 'peaks' from a spot so close to town. And not that much effort needed to reach the cache. What a spot!

When this cache was published last summer, I put it on my "to do immediately" list, expecting that I'd get to Estes Park fairly soon as I have frequently done through the years. Well, that didn't happen, and here it is a summer later and I still hadn't driven up Old Ranger Drive since the cache came out. Today that changed. I promised my puppies Orizaba and Chimborazo a couple of short hikes in the area today, this being one of them. So we loaded into the car and made the drive up the Big T for the hikes and for some cache-finding. Although I've been to the top of Old Man Mountain 4 or 5 times over the years, I had never come out to this wonderful viewpoint west of and well below the actual summit. It's a beautiful area. We encountered no one while we made the short hike out and back, and spent some leisurely time reviewing all the RMNP peaks visible from the general cache vicinity. That review brought back some wonderful memories of my past climbs or hikes to the tops of all of them.

The cache and contents are in excellent condition. Thanks for this fun, Libertarian Lad! I'm giving this cache a Favorite point. (btw, I'm heading back to Madison later this month...haven't visited the UW campus for several years).

Fairly quick find (after the hike) while picking up the latest geocaches during our annual visit to Estes Park. Giving it a favorite point for the hike and the location. TFTC!

I can't believe no one's gone for this one yet. Actually, I can't believe I haven't gone for it either, but the new souvenir hunt got me looking and I realized I'd missed it.

I've never been back here before. What a great spot! Left some swag, as is my wont. Thanks!
