For many years I actively worked at reaching the summits of the highest 100 peaks in Colorado (the “Centennials”). Then some issues slowed me down and eventually forced me to stop this quest. But last October I got to the top of one of them, and I recently decided to give it a “go” and try for a few this summer. Mt. Ouray has been unfinished business for me, so yesterday icezebra11 and I drove over from Wellington/Loveland to hike up the mountain. We camped above Marshall Pass and made the nice hike to the top; I hid a cache there. Watch for its publication. Mt. Ouray, with an elevation of 13,971 feet, is the highest of the Centennials I had not yet climbed. I now have eight remaining Centennials, and expect to get to the summits of a couple of these later this summer.
Of course finding some geocaches was the other primary objective of the trip–especially, making the hike to reach sapphyre. And there were a bunch of other caches of interest in the area, including this one. We enjoyed decent weather except for very light snow that briefly hit us the morning of our sapphyre climb. And indeed, we found some nice caches! Icezebra11's log gives more particulars about our finding this cache that I won’t repeat here. Thanks for placing and maintaining this mountain cache, mtnguy40!

Denali41 and I left our homes in northern CO for a fun-filled climbing and caching road trip to the Sawatch range. Our first goal was to climb Mt Ouray so we drove to Marshall Pass and then headed up the 4x4 trail to the end of the road. (Yes, the trail is open to motorized vehicles for approximately 1.3 miles north of Marshall Pass road.) On our way we stopped to look for this cache. I took quite a bit of searching but Denali41 eventually found the container.
We opened it up and it was quite wet inside. The ziplock was not "zipped" so the log book was soaked to the point that the pages were sticking together. With some very careful manipulation we were able to separate each page with signatures. We dried out the baggie, signed a separate piece of paper, and placed it in the ziplock with the log book. We made sure the baggie was sealed.
Thanks for placing this cache mtnguy40 and jadedrivercat, it's in a cool location!!!

Day hiking on the CT from Marshall Pass. Couldn't find the cache. There were a lot of old tree limbs fallen in the area and may have been under them?

Looked for it on our way back from the trail head. Cache had water in it and even the log book was totally soaked, although it was in a plastic bag. Nice find though and beautiful area.

Found on the way up the trail on a group hike. The cache was half-full of rusty water but the log was dry enough to sign. We didn't summit Ouray (rain and sleet moved in), but made it to a meadow with great views in every direction. Thanks for putting this one up high.

Dianne, Pam, and myself found this on our way down from hiking to the summit of Mt. Ouray. Dianne spotted the cache first. We started looking on the wrong side of the trail and had to expand our search. The container contained a lot of water which I emptied. Fortunately the log book in the baggy was dry. TN LN TFTC!

Got this one before we bailed on Marshall Pass road to get back to Poncha Springs. Then we got totally dumped on. I broke my bike chain and had to coast the last 10 miles. I am not kidding. Vort.

Spending our 4th summer in Buena Vista with a dozen or so of our Jeeping friends. We love to explore the roughest, toughest dirt roads in our red-mobile, and finding lonely caches in out-of-the-way places, tftc

Out with Redcx and spouses to cache along Marshall Pass Rd and CR 200. We were able to drive right up to this cache, no signs prohibiting motorized vehicles. TFTC

We found it today while doing some hiking on the CDT. Cache is still in good shape. Sure glad our GPSr didn't zero out at weeds19's picture! TNLN and signed the logbook. Thanks.
