The cache is hidden almost as far up the trail along the South Platte River as you can go without getting wet. Another few hundred feet and you will normally be in the flooded section of the river that comprises Strontia Springs Reservoir. You can get here by hiking or biking. You could also use a kayak and you might see some of those on the way.
This cache is the rehide of another cache of mine that I archived because of the lengthy closure of Waterton Canyon on the other side of the very same reservoir. That one was called Waterton Side Trail #5 (GC1MW31). It’s the same container – a nice ammo can. That cache was the most remote of the side trail series so I though I would make it the most remote on this side of the reservoir.

The trail that leads to this cache is what remains of the old Colorado and Southern railroad grade that went through Waterton.

You can get past the fence by using the weird step thingy (a stile). You might be able to go around the fence closer to the river but that was not possible on the day I hid the cache due to the level of the water in the river.

Rumor has it that there is a benchmark a bit farther downstream. Perhaps if the reservoir is low, you can get to it. (KK0688)

It is about a mile and a half from the parking area to the cache.

 Hints

The rocks around here are good for hiding a cache. It is on the side of the trail away from the river and requires a very short climb of about 4 or 5 feet. Coords can be iffy in the canyon.

Last cache of the day. I'm glad it was nice and quick, and that I didn't have to do any more scrambling in the poison ivy. I really hope that I don't get too many breakouts from it. This whole trail has tons of it. 11:48:00 AM% Thanks!
