Colorado Spirit Quest Series

Sapinero Cemetery

Take a historical walking tour on this quick two stage multi-cache (see details) all within the cemetery.
Room for small travel bugs & micro coins. Bring your own pen.
Do NOT disturb or deface any grave markers.

History:

Sapinero was first named Buchannan, Glendale, and Soap Creek. The name was eventually changed to Sapinero for Ute Indian sub-chief “Sapawanero” or “Sapavanero”, who was the brother-in-law of the famous Ute chief, Ouray. It is believed the name was chosen to give the railroad political or diplomatic advantage with the Ute Indians.

Sapinero was originally located on the north side of the Gunnison River about 1 mile north of its present location. In 1962-1963, it was abandoned and moved 1 mile south as Blue Mesa Reservoir was constructed. The original town site is now under water. Sapinero is currently located south of Blue Mesa Reservoir (see waypoint below).

At the same time, the Sapinero Cemetery was relocated 1 mile north placing it on the north side of Blue Mesa Resevoir surrounded by (but not on) National Park Service land.

Colorado Spirit Quest Information:

The Colorado Spirit Quest (CSQ) is a series of caches placed by many individuals, near cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of paying respect to the many pioneer ancestors that have “walked” before us. There are hundreds of cemeteries in the rural and mountain communities across Colorado. This series will provide a history tour of these cemeteries. If you are apprehensive about cemeteries, avoid this series.

The CSQ endeavor is an enormous and relentless task. It will only flourish if there is a multitude of volunteer cachers willing to place these caches. Each person that places a CSQ cache is responsible for its maintenance.

New volunteers are always Welcome!! If you are interested in being a part of this project, email the owner of Colorado Spirit Quest #1 – Golden Mountain Passage.

Camping at Curecanti and saw this spirit quest multi and had to try for it. Got the information needed and got to the final GZ. Then the fun started. As previous cachers have stated this is a well camouflaged hide. My geopartner finally spotted it on the ground. We placed it off the ground and wish the next cacher good luck. Thanks for the fun hide.

TFTC started looking on wrong side of fence thinking the cemetery was private and didn’t read a permissions comment, so then assumed it was not private land and looked inside grounds and made the find.
