History:
Established in 1893 as Ruby-Anthracite for the active
Ruby-Anthracite Mine, the town is located near the Anthracite
Creek. In 1901, Floresta was renamed for the spanish word for
forest when the Floresta Mine opened. The Floresta Mine was noted
for being located at a higher elevation than any other coal mine in
the United States and second highest in the world. Before closing
in 1919, the Floresta mine achieved its largest output in 1910,
when 68,980 tons of coal were mined.
Floresta was a coal mining town that eventually became the shipping
hub for the area. The narrow gauge railroad made it to Floresta in
1893 & ran there until 1918. In addition to the mine works and
breaker, Floresta had a school, post office, saw mill, telegraph
office, Colorado Fuel and Iron Company Store and numerous houses
and cabins.
The Floresta Cemetery is known to exist, but since the Floresta
town site and cemetery are on private property no specific
information is known. It is believed that 4 people are buried in
Floresta.

Please take some time to reflect back
on the lives of these pioneers and the effort it took to make
Colorado such a great state!! The only guarantee in life is death.
Where will you be?
Colorado Spirit Quest
Information:
The Colorado Spirit Quest (CSQ) is a series of caches placed by
many individuals, near cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of
paying respect to the many pioneer ancestors that have
"walked" before us. There are hundreds of cemeteries in
the rural and mountain communities across Colorado. This series
will provide a history tour of these cemeteries. If you are
apprehensive about cemeteries, avoid this series.
The CSQ endeavor is an enormous and relentless task. It will
only flourish if there is a multitude of volunteer cachers willing
to place these caches. Each person that places a CSQ cache is
responsible for its maintenance.
New volunteers are always Welcome!! If you are
interested in being a part of this project,
email the owner of
Colorado Spirit Quest #1 – Golden Mountain Passage.
