Ever wondered about Round Mountain and what's up there? Take a nice .4 mile hike along a historic road which gave the miners of the 1800's access to Granite Basin via Round Mountain, without having to ford the East River. Park at the gate along HWY 135 between mile marker 18 and the East River (See waypoint chart). The hike is easy, but the area around the cache is very rocky -- wear hiking shoes. Elevation at the cache: 8550'
Round Mountain is a volcanic feature. It is composed of rhyolite, and is possibly a volcanic "plug" -- the remnant of a volcanic vent. Enjoy the view of Crested Butte Mountain, Red Mountain and the East River as you hike toward the cache. There is no trail to the top, possibly because Round Mountain had no mining value. The road goes around the flank of Round Mountain before it heads up Granite Basin. The road to the cache crosses private land, so please stay on the road or close to it. The cache is located in an interesting area.
Look at the hint -- the signal bounces around a bit. Cache is in a clear plastic box with a green rim.
