Baldwin, Colorado, was once a gold and coal mining settlement and a
stop on the Denver and Rio Grande and the Denver, South Park and
Pacific railroad lines. Now it is less than a ghost town: one
intact cabin which still appears to be used at least part of the
time and a few bits and pieces of structures from long ago, all on
private property.
At geocaching.com, however, Baldwin is alive and well. When the
zip code for Gunnison, Colorado, is typed into the Geocaching "Seek
a Cache" page, this is what is displayed: All Geocaches By Postal
Code - From State: CO (BALDWIN - 81230).
In spite of this, since the rest of history has moved beyond
Baldwin, I did, too, to hide a cache.
Access to the cache is on a remarkably smooth dirt road. The
road is probably quite muddy when wet, but it dries quickly once
the sun hits it. It is unlikely that the cache would be accessible
in winter. The road can be driven by car. Often, quite a few
marmots can be seen on or near the road. Watch for cattle,
horseback riders, and people herding cattle by horseback on the
road.
The cache is an ammo can. There is a short uphill walk involved,
which can leave you breathless at that altitude.
Original contents were:
mini lint roller
magic 8 ball
Colorado keyring
plastic snake
Colorado refrigerator magnet
log book and pencil
brand new green Jeep travel bug
Due to confusion caused by a private
road's appearing on many maps, additional driving directions are
encrypted below.
