The High Country
IN KEEPING with the tradition of providing an easy and fun cache specially for your K-9s as well as for you, here’s a cache in the Colorado high country that’s accessible all year. The cache is located about 31 miles south of Interstate 70 on State Hwy. 65. You’ll be traveling into Grand Mesa National Forest, the highest flat top mountain in the world, a vast plateau dropping off in sheer black cliffs, reflecting the sky from three hundred lakes, sitting two miles above sea level and one mile above the valleys below.

The cache is about one mile from roadside parking at an elevation of 10,800 feet. The roads are kept open all winter and these local non-motorized trails are usually groomed in the winter courtesy of the Grand Mesa Nordic Council. The area is mostly flat (remember it’s a mesa). A trail map is posted and free handouts are sometimes available. Travel aids should include water and insect repellant in the summer and x-country skis or snowshoes in the winter.

The cache container is a 4” diameter tube that initially contains: a copy of the Doggy News, original Nylabone, industrial strength Tough Ball, embroidered leash, chew bone, patriotic bandana, and log & pencil.

The lid is easily removable so please refasten well. And, due to the “local residents,” PLEASE NO FOOD ITEMS!

So take your pet on a Dog Trail in the Rockies and enjoy the peacefulness, serenity, solitude and beauty of the Grand Mesa. The trails continue on for miles of hiking or skijoring and there’s a lake just a stone’s (or tennis ball’s) throw from the cache. You’ll both enjoy it.

We have rarely hiked on the Grand Mesa…..will try to get up there more this year - this hike was GLORIOUS. The Scale Lakes rd was dry and has a moderate incline when going from Skyway to County Line. Found this cache, but did not continue up the road for the other two. Next time! TFTC!

Out one last time before snow falls. Fantastic cache! Left a sticker, pin, and a carabiner. Took nothing.

TFTC, found today with CB_Beauty after we FTFd Groomed Trail 1 and 2. Ran into a gentleman who was working on the new mountain bike trail. Great cache for walking the dog. CBB found this one, as I was making it much harder than it needed to be. TN, left toy Soldier.

At the time of our finding of this cache on 10-11-14, never dreamed that we would be then next to find it again! As we last found this in the "Green" and this time literally on snowshoes, the way it was set and meant to be found, gave serious consideration to logging again as "found - in Winter" but resisted the urge.

We were out with a church group of kids for a snow-day getting them used to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Involved with the group tagging along behind we set two new caches and suddenly I realized we were near this cache. Had long ago deleted it from my GPS and no phone reception so had only memory to go by. Walked less than 50' from where we stopped on trail and said "Got to be somewhere in this area" and described the cache. One of the girls spotted it almost instantly after!

Instead of being almost out of reach the cache is now at eye level due to snow, could stick a 5' ski pole down below snow level and still not hit bottom. Several of the kids signed log this date and traded SWAG, visited TBs. thanks for this neat cache to teach the kids about cool caches!

We are proud to report that as of today, having logged this and "Snowshoers Delight" as well as having cleared a long standing DNF on Land's End #2, we have logged every single cache in Grand Mesa National Forest West of Leon Peak (Inclusive). It took 3 months of intense effort and planning, spending nearly every weekend (both days) up on the Mesa. During that time we have planted nearly 30 caches up here, many of them in preparation for our International Earthcache Day Event tomorrow at Land o' Lakes Observation Point.

In the process we have traveled the length and breadth of the mesa as well as having read numerous books on the subject; Fish wars, geology, water rights, etc. Thanks to all the geocachers that have brought to life much of the history of Grand Mesa!

In addition to walking out to Scales Lake for the two caches out there, we also re-walked one of our 5k Earthcache routes and set 5 caches along the way so we have more than gained our souvenir for that in anticipation of being busy all day Sunday with the Event .

We wondered exactly how this cache would be constructed so as to be both waterproof and available from ground level as well as above snow level in the winter. Questions are answered! COOL CACHE and method of hide! Gets our FAV point! TFTC SL Visited TBs
