There and Back Again; a Geocacher’s Holiday

You do NOT have to read “The Hobbit” by J.R.R. Tolkien, nor do you need to watch the movie or be familiar with the story in any way to find all seven geocaches in this series.  All caches are just off the easy trail; this walk/hike is about 2 miles TOTAL, with minimal elevation change.

Be sure to write down the single digit that is on the inside cover of the logbook in each of the first six caches that give you the coordinates to the final, which is a plastic ammo can.  There is also a trackable code on the inside of the cover of all seven logbooks so you can discover seven trackables, each somehow related to the story.

Park at the listed coordinates and you will be there and back again (TABA) as fast as your hobbit feet will take you.  Find caches #1 through #6 in that order and the puzzle cache final that is #7 is on your way back to parking, after #6.

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again is a children's fantasy novel by English author J. R. R. Tolkien. It was published in 1937 to wide critical acclaim, being nominated for the Carnegie Medal and awarded a prize from the New York Herald Tribune for best juvenile fiction. The book is recognized as a classic in children's literature, and is one of the best-selling books of all time with over 100 million copies sold.

The Hobbit is set in Middle-earth and follows home-loving Bilbo Baggins, the hobbit of the title, who joins the wizard Gandalf and thirteen dwarves that make up Thorin Oakenshield's Company, on a quest to reclaim the dwarves' home and treasure from the dragon Smaug. Bilbo's journey takes him from his peaceful rural surroundings into more sinister territory.

So, enjoy second breakfast, pack appropriately (water, hiking shoes, etc), have fun and get a little outdoor recreation which is always a good thing !

There are seven caches in this "There and Back Again" (TABA) series:

#1 Roast Mutton - TABA

#2 Over Hill and Under Hill - TABA

#3 Out of the Frying-Pan into the Fire - TABA

#4 Flies and Spiders - TABA

#5 Fire and Water - TABA

#6 A Thief in the Night - TABA

#7 The Last Stage - TABA

The final cache is at N 39° 01.ABC W 105° 02.DEF (Letters A through F are on the inside cover of the logbook in each of the first six caches).

#1 Roast Mutton

Roast Mutton is the second of 19 chapters in the book.  Low on supplies, Bilbo and the dwarves camp and while unable to make a fire, their lookout spots a light in the distance over a hill, and the Company sends Bilbo to investigate and steal any supplies.  Bilbo finds three trolls (Tom, Bert and William) sitting by a fire, eating mutton and arguing.

Congratulations to jherber for being FTF !

10:23 AM Today we stopped at the farmer's market, as is our custom. We ran into our friends from Carroll Lakes, who had children and grandchildren in tow. We had a little field lab about geocaching at Memorial Park and bid the kids safe travel back to Dallas.

Then we came to Lovell Gulch to do an easier hike after a hard day yesterday. Nicely done. I swapped geocoins.

I signed the log.

Thank you, 3 Williams Kidz, for the geocache. I am adding a favorite point.

Easy find on this warm day. We can't complain, it's about 100 degrees back home. Thanks for the fun start to our hike.

Found it. Now for the puzzle part....

The Hobbit. Perhaps my all time favorite. I didn’t read it in 1937. I read it in 1964 and then went on to the Trilogy. Hard to believe but I could read at two! I love lamb. Was raised on it. But not mutton. It’s disgusting and only fit for trolls. This is going to be fun. Picked up something with the Canadian flag attached and left a moose. Seems appropriate.

Out this morning with estes01 doing this loop. Lots of familiar spots from the previous set of caches. Thanks for refreshing these! Traded trackables, TFTC!

Got on this trail about 7 this morning before the walkers, dog walkers and flies. Anxious to find some with Boysie and hopefully finish the Series before the end of this week. Besides smelling every bush and tree along the way and winding me around a few, Boysie was good company. Jotted down the #, SL and we were on our way. Thanks Glenn.

I saw that this series just published and I new there are a few FTF hounds that live close by.

So debating on to or not to go, I got a message from R&B CO and we decided to head up the pass to give this series a go.

We noticed that #1 and #2 were found before we got to the parking spot.

No other cars were parked here?

Anyway, we might just get a bunch of gut wrenching second to finds this morning.

Thanks for a fun series to hunt for!
