Arachnophobia or arachnephobia is a specific phobia, the fear of spiders and other arachnids such as scorpions. People with arachnophobia tend to feel uneasy in any area they believe could harbor spiders or that has visible signs of their presence, such as webs. If arachnophobics see a spider, they may not enter the general vicinity until they have overcome the panic attack that is often associated with their phobia.

The 715 trail doesn't have many geocaches on it. Which makes it a perfect spot for this phobia series. It's a moderate trail, very low traffic. It's really peaceful, and absolutely gorgeous. Happy hunting.

Well that 1st storm passed and we are on our way again. This one was spotted by my huggle too. Really good coordinates are great to have. Another fav point for a cache in a beautiful valley we can ride to.

1:35 PM We are here from Dallas for our typical August vacation in Divide in order to skip the Texas heat for a couple of weeks.

Today I am hiking/caching around Mt Herman with WingsAndTails.

W&T found this one. My GPS read 52 ft at GZ. Hers read 8 ft.

My reading was N962 W464.

I signed the log. Thanks, Ms.Stang, for the cache.

For some reason at this one our GPS devices were sending us in very different directions. Mine was showing 10-15 feet when we found it but allenmabry's was quite a bit more. I spotted the attachment before I saw the actual container. TFTC

OCW the Rat22 family this morning and gave this one a serious look and thought we were not going to find it, but as we were leaving GZ I spied the 8 legged monster. We signed, returned, and headed up the trail to finish the day. All is well here. TFTC SL

Grr. I had the right idea of what to look for, and this one was ranked 1 star difficulty, but it took some careful examination to find it since it blended in so well.

David Quammen has a fun, short essay, "Phobia and Philia" that has a few gems in it. For instance, K.A. Adams proposed that arachnophobia stems "from a childhood struggle to escape maternal entanglement". Um, wow. I saw Charlotte's Web as a kid, so maybe that helped soften my image of spiders, despite living in Texas where brown recluse and black widows occur, and some species like the Longjaw spider have make massive webs. Some of the tunnel and orb spider webs sparkle in morning dew and look amazing. The essay mentions Edward Wilson's fear of spiders and his book Biophilia, which I need to put on my reading pile (but first I need to read Half Earth, darnit). In short, there is experimental evidence that nature phobias (and philias) have a genetic component, since some danger requires instinctive reflex, not conscious decisions.

fyi: really pretty pink Mariposa flowers were blooming nearby.

Java Chip and I found this one while exploring a trail we hadn't been on yet! Thanks for bringing us to this area and TFTC!
