Shane was riding his horse through the Mesa Verde area of canyons and mesas scouting for lost cattle. He came over a ridge and saw a young Pueblo Indian girl laying on the ground with her basket of serviceberries scattered all around. The girl was unconscious and Shane looked down at her swollen leg to see two puncture wounds. He knew immediately she had been bitten by a rattler.
There was no one around and Shane knew the girl needed immediate medical attention and she would not survive the long ride to Cortez, which was nearly 15 miles away. Then he remembered the Old Medicine Man at The Hogan SW of Mancos which was only a few miles away. Shane made a travois and would take the girl there. Shane arrived just in time, the Medicine Man took one look at the girl and started to treat her with a secrete poultice of ground plants and minerals. He also gave the girl some medicinal tea said to slow down the flow of the poison in the body. By morning the girl was starting to respond. A Pueblo Indian runner was sent to notify the tribe about the fate of the girl. Shane had saved her life. He quietly saddled up and rode on. He would check back on her on his next trip.
