This hike is located between two large bodies of water: Grand Lake and Shadow Mountain Reservoir, though you will see more of the reservoir. The trail goes through several places where there are wonderful views of the water, plentiful columbine, and part of a ghost forest. If it's warm when you go, there is a small inlet in the reservoir where ducks congregate.
From Grand Avenue in Grand Lake, Colorado, take Vine Street, Cairns Avenue, and Jerico Road to the parking lot of the East Shore Trailhead of the Continental Divide Trail.
The trailhead sign there reads “Shadow Mountain 8,372’”.
Walk up the trail for approximately 0.22 miles on a bearing of 220°, almost to a sign reading “East Shore Trail”.
From there, walk approximately 83 yards on a bearing of 90° up a straight abandoned road to an old fire ring.
From the center of the fire ring, step down the hillside approximately 8 yards on a bearing of 330° to a horizontal log embedded in the hillside.
The cache is in a plastic box sheltered under the downhill side of the log.

NOTE: The distance along the 220° azimuth was slightly corrected in this description on August 22, 2009 based on the reccomendation of moose1. All bearings are measured in true north.

My GPS was not offering much help, tree coverage kept blocking signal. Next person who finds, could you give clarification on location of cache in relation to fire ring? Description says bearing of 330, while comments below say 050. Quite a difference. Help would appreciated!

Boy for a little hike we thought we were taking. This turned out to be a real headache and a half. Sheepherder had a great fall. Glad we found it.
