The area that would become Shawnee was first homesteaded in 1886 by James W. Price, who later platted the town site in 1889 and served as its postmaster. Price sold residential and commercial lots in his town while running a hotel and store. As the focus of the Colorado and Southern Railroad shifted from the mining industry to tourist traffic, the railroad constructed the Shawnee Lodge, creating a small resort community in the area supported by multiple hotels as well as private cottages. When Shawnee regained popularity as a tourist destination in the 1950s, some of these private cottages were rented to visitors while new summer homes were also constructed. This cache is located next to the Shawnee/Platte Canyon Community Center, which was built by community members in 1948 and continues to serve multiple organizations.
