You have to work a little bit but this is one of the most scenic trails near the Denver area!
This cache is along the Chief Mountain Trail which can be approached two different ways. The semi-official trailhead is near MM 18 on route 103 (squaw Pass Road). The small parking space is on the south side of the highway and the trailhead is on the North side. The better way to start this trail is to take a small dirt road off the north side of 103 almost right at MM 19. Take this rough but passable road about 1/4 mile until you reach another dirt road near a marker "192.1". Park here and scramble up a short hill on the west side to an old forest road. From here it is approx 1.55 miles to the cache. The summit of Chief Mountain is only 0.15 more miles farther at 11,755 feet! One half mile up the forest road, the Chief mountain trail goes off to the left - it is clearly marked with a sign (with the wrong mileage).
From here go approx 1.1 miles to a large ammo can cache - plenty of room for goodies and bugs. Please tread lightly - the cache can be reached by walking just on the many flat rocks. It is within 100 feet of the trail. Even with some snow, this cache should be accessible.
There was a camera in the cache but it was stolen. I will try to replace it soon.

Gorgeous hike! It was still really snowy but we were prepared with micro spikes on our shoes. Thanks for hiding this in such a beautiful place.

First Colorado cache!

My bachelor party of 11 all started the hike, but with most of us in sneakers, some turned back early.

A hearty 7 made it to the summit though some difficult, snowy terrain.

Amazing views up at the top. Gotta be a favorite!

Finally decided to get this one on my 70th ascent of Chief. Great view of Evans from here. Thanks for the new container!

Found it but didn’t open. Good location to get kids exploring the top of Chief Mountain.

We live in the area and have visited this cache many times over the years.
It has disappeared/been muggled - it is GONE!
However, we replaced the cache with a new ammo box and log book.
We also added TWO travel bugs for the next to find - NTF?
Hoping that this cache remains for many years and brings smiles to many cachers.

Nice hike to the top. A little snow along the way. Wind was harsh at the top. Searched for 20 minutes. No geocache.

Today is my 400th consecutive day with a cache find!
I had a great day out hiking with Talks2Trees, altogether we walked about 3 miles and we got to summit a mountain! This was our target cache for the day, and I was happy to see how close it is to the top. I haven't hiked to the top of a mountain since we moved here from Oklahoma. Lovely hike with some great views. Except... Along the way my shoe fell apart! We were halfway through our hike and I lost the bottom layer of my right boot. I was able to complete our goal, I just had to do it with less shoe. I really need new hiking boots... It was a fun and easy find, I walked right up to it. The container says "I love you." I love you too, geocaching! Everything is in good shape, I traded trackables and also left behind a smiley face bouncy ball, a beatle, and a tjFirey bottlecap token. Had a good time reading through all the old log papers... Now we'll continue upward so we can stand on top, then it's time to head back down and go home, with maybe just a few caches on the way. This was a great find, not only the cache but the view as well. My first cache near a summot and my highest elevation find to date. I can't wait to find more of these mountains! This cache helped us decide where we'd go today, thank you for placing it!
