Check out the spectacular views of Lake City, Colorado while hunting this cache. The cache is hidden at the top of a hill that overlooks Lake City from the west side of town. Bring a camera along, you won't be disappointed with the view.
This hike can easily take two hours round trip. Portions of the climb can be very precarious, depending on what route up the hill you take. Terrain varies from small loose shale with little or no uphill traction to solid rock and everything in between. Choose your route carefully. I recommend a day pack with plenty of water and a hiker's first aid kit.

Cache Description:

The cache was placed in a cookie tin (Raggedy Ann and Andy design) and was duct taped shut for weatherproofing. The contents include several anti-bacterial bandaids, one small package of Teddy Bear Grahams in a foil pack, one new roll of 24-exposure Black and White film, a handfull of Vitamin C coughdrops, one red Bic lighter, and ten very special surprise items. (Please just use/take one of these, so other geocachers can enjoy them)

Spoilers:

My starting point was The Matterhorn Lodge. (N 38 01.878 W 107 19.043 elev 8684) Dave and Karen run the place and are great hosts. If you are going to stay in Lake City, I would highly recommend the Matterhorn. Make sure you say hello to Roxie if you stop by. (Dave and Karen are intrigued about the concept of geocaching and would love it if any geocachers could stop by even if you don't stay at the lodge)

My halfway point on the hike was ( N 38 01.878 W 107 19.156 elev 9029) My hiking partner and I split up at this point. He took a more southerly track up the hill, while I chose a more northerly route. I made it and he didn't, FWIW.

You are almost there if you find the old campsite (N 38 02.022 W 107.19.373 elev 9716) Approaching from the bottom of the hill, you should begin to see pieces of blue tarpaulin material. The pieces are small at first, but as you get closer to the campsite you will see larger chunks of what looks to be what the camper used to cover his makeshift shelter. The campsite is pretty simple, a modified leanto strung between two trees. There is also a campfire/cook area on the downhill side of what is left from the shelter. You are only about thirty paces away from the cache at this point.

The rest of the hints are encrypted.

Good luck! There is a special surprise in the cache. Make sure you just take one so others can have a blast when they celebrate finding this cache.

 Hints

Approximately thirty five paces to the south and slightly down the hill you will find a jaggedy tree stump. There is a hollow at the base of the stump on the downhill side. I covered the cache with a little dirt and rock so it is visible to the eye without having to dig. Good Luck!

wow! ok so our route: A to B. not advised. lol. we met the current keeper of the matterhorn (a VERY nice debra goodman) and she didn’t know of any trail that lead to the top of the mountain and we definitely didn’t see one or any “old miners trail” lol. she gave us some advice of how she would do it and we bushwhacked our way to the top. what a ride! or numbers for the round trip : 1hour 55 minutes 1.7 miles altitude gain of about 1000 feet. signed the log at the cache and took nothing but a picture at the top. from the cache we saw a huge water fall in town and went to discover it when we got back. it was in fact huge. i guess we hit lake city on a the peak run off weekend. what a great time we’ve had here. tftc, the cache was dry but the lid is broken. replaced as found.

After pulling in to town and taking one look at that steep beast, we decided to take the northern approach. About 1.7 miles from the parking area, wife's pace put us there in about an hour. Very steep in the beginning. Couldn't really leave her behind as it was our 23rd Anniversary. Cache was found in good shape, all contents dry. Last log in the book was 2013 and TB from 2012 was still in there. Grabbed it to get it moving again. Thunder and clouds rolled in while we were up on top, but no precipitation at all. Thanks for the oldie.

I was in lake city to ride motorcycles and thought I'd do some geocaching. My friend and I took about an hour and a half to ascend to the top. I am way to fat to be climbing like that. Thanks for the cache, it's the most fun I've had looking for one.

Husband and I accidentally walked our own trail because we couldn't figure out what was a trail and what wasn't in the beginning but still found it!

I have been driven through Lake City ever summer for many year now. Usually we make a stop to get some Ice Cream and play in the park. This year we arrived Sunday morning and the Ice Cream shop was closed along with all of the shops. My wife told me that I should go ahead and find this cache since she knew it was one I wanted. I started up the hill at around 9:30 and it just got steeper and steeper the further up I went. About a 3rd of the way there I was having second thoughts since I knew I would have to come down and those rocks were sharp, but my desire for this one wouldn't let me turn back. I pretty much stuck to the ravine and the hill to the south of the ravine traversing back a forth. When I found trees to walk under then the terrain tended to be non-rocks, otherwise it was pretty much rocks all the way. At one point I actually topped the ridge to the south and on my way I said to myself don't slip here because you won't stop rolling until you hit the bottom. Anyways I finally made it to the top at which point I sat down and rested. That was a tough climb. After I caught by breath I made the quick find. The plastic bags around the container are in pretty rough shape and probably need to be replaced. I signed the log, left a trackable and head down. Overall it 2hr hike for which I got great views of the valley below and Lake City. Thanks for keeping this old one alive.

OMG!! What a hike. We started behind the Matterhorn Hotel like suggested and scaled the face of the mountain!! We found it and it truly had some of the most spectacular views of Lake City. It is definetely not a trip you can make in 20 minutes!! It is a several hour hike. Bringing the water suggestion is a must! Good L:uck and be careful!!!
