Cache Container

This cache was placed by the vacationing Dasenbrocks from Nebraska and the Colorado natives, the Olivers. Let Hoosier Pass summit be your starting point. A 4x4 is recommended or you may choose to hike the 2 miles (one way) with an elevation gain of roughly 400ft. Ascend the road up from the Hoosier Pass summit and take the sharp right-hand turn which will lead you along the east side of the ridge. If driving, we recommend parking at Crystal Lake near the abandoned mine shaft at N 39 22.535, W 106 04.738, then hiking the rest of the way to the cache. Your experience will be more pleasant if you hike along the 4x4 trail until very near the cache.

Safety Note: The cache is not in the mine shaft, so we suggest staying out of the shaft.

 Hints

Ascend from Crystal lake along the 4x4 trail. There is a point before you reach the second mine shaft that levels out with a nice view of the lake. The cache is roughly 50 feet ENE and below the trail, looking directly at the lake. It is behind the second large rock covered loosely with smaller rocks.

Wow what a beautiful view from the cache site! We started at the parking lot just off hwy 9 where the Continental Divide sign is. We hiked up to where Crystal Lake road forks off to the right. Down we went to the lake, enjoyed the views and then saw we were so close to a geocache! There was a windy trail that looped up and around and brought us 50’ from gz! After finding the cache, we thought we spied a trail that would take us over the ridge to Hoosier Pass Rd. It turns out there wasn’t really much of a path and we bushwhacked to the top, where we met up with the road and had an uneventful trek back down to the car. Total hike was 4.3 miles and took us 2.5 hours to complete. Not bad with five kids ages 5-12 along with us. Thank you for the reason to get lost along these trails! Sincerely, fellow geocaching visitors from Nebraska.

First Ever find! Took my 15 year old son on a hike, saw some strange symbol on my new GPS and followed it to the cache! We had a blast! Found a new hobby (like I needed another!)

We really enjoyed the hike to this cache. Surprising that no one has been here since September 2012. We parked a short ways past the fork because from then on the jeep road was replete with mud puddles, muddy tracks, creek crossings and large patches of snow blocking the road. But, we're glad we hiked because it was a gorgeous day and a beautiful hike. The views are awesome. Once at the lake, we were tempted to hike straight up to the cache, but were glad for the advice to stick to the jeep trail. Found the cache easily and it's in great condition. T: the geocoin and keychain. L: our WOW F.R.O.G and a air patrol patch. SL T4TSmile Afterwards we had our picnic lunch at the lake. This was by far our favorite cache today and are awarding it a favorite point.

Wasn't necessarily intending on finding this cache while out hiking with prunes_a_burro, but saw it was nearby on my GPSr. Briefly considered climbing up to it via the rocks for fortunately we took the road instead and it was a quick find. We kept going up the road to another mine for lunch, then over the ridge and back down to the parking area. Thanks for placing this cache!

Hiking with the dog and LittleBaldy. Love this area -- got to peruse many mines (carefully)!

Took the Sugar Bear trackable, left some camo duct tape. Thanks!
