One of a series of caches recognizing figures from Pueblo's early days.
Mahlon Thatcher moved to Pueblo from his native Pennsylvania to join his brother John as a partner, first in the general store and then in the banking business. He extended his banking interests from Pueblo to other Colorado towns, including Denver, Trinidad, Las Animas, Lamar, Rocky Ford, Florence, Silverton, Alamosa, Ouray and Montrose. His business interests also grew, to include Pueblo Union Depot & Railroad Company, American Smelting & Refining Company, Great Western Sugar Company, Standard Fire Brick Company, Cement Securities Company and the Nevada-California Electric Corporation. Thatcher never built his successes on others' failures; in fact, he frequently helped others to gain a start in their own successful careers. Thatcher was reported to be the wealthiest man in Colorado when he passed away in 1916 at his home, "Hillcrest," in Pueblo.
