While a number of Native American tribes sometimes hunted or passed through South Park, the Ute tribe was the one most associated with this area. Many passes, trails, and waterways are named for the Utes, including a route near here that brought Ute families from their winter quarters in the south to the cool summers of South Park. Nearby is a “medicine tree” that reveals the Ute practice of peeling back the bark of a ponderosa pine tree to access the healthy layer of material just under the bark's surface.

The Ute Creek Trailhead parking area is located just off County Road 77 (Tarryall Road). The cache is a short walk from the parking area but if you pass the Lost Creek Wilderness sign-in box you have gone too far. Continue down the trail to find the next cache!
