The Bassam Guard Station dates back to the early 20th century during a time when a lack of roads made it impossible for Forest Service rangers to manage the large areas of land that they do today. Employees stationed here could be responsible for a wide variety of tasks including grazing management, fire protection, and construction. As the Forest Service developed their road system these guard stations became obsolete and were frequently demolished. Thankfully, the Bassam Guard Station survived and can now be rented for recreational use.

Bassam Cabin and its outbuildings

The best access to this cache is via Chaffee County Road 307, which can be accessed from highway 285 west of Trout Creek Pass. Take CR 307 to CR 187 and stay on the road for approximately 8 miles. Turn right on to Forest Service Road 186, and the on to FSR 186A. There is a small parking area at the gate for the Bassam Guard Station, but if the gate is locked you will not be able to see the cabin. The cache is located outside the fenced area in a nearby aspen grove.

Searched for a while but could never find it. The location leads to a muddy swamp but a cool view

After stopping in Cincinnati for the Giga Geowoodstock, wanderw0man and I are working on the CSP geotour. It’s beautiful driving from cache to cache and the history of the area is fascinating. If this is an ammo then it’s missing . Searched for quite some time but no luck ???

A bit more snow than Black Dumps on this one, but the cache is not buried and easily accessible from easy parking on dry road. TFTC

Thxs for another South Park geo tour cache. SL. all is well at this location. Don't think I've ever seen a pencil sharpener in a cache but good idea. Always carry a pen w/me.
