Trout Creek Pass was once the meeting point of the great railroads of South Park: the Denver, South Park & Pacific (DSP&P) and the Colorado Midland. The DSP&P was incorporated in 1872 but did not reach the summit of Kenosha Pass until 1879, eventually crossing South Park and reaching Trout Creek Pass in the summer of 1880. The DSP&P was constructed as a narrow gauge railroad for its cost benefits in the mountainous and sparsely populated terrain of the Rocky Mountains. The Colorado Midland Railway was incorporated in 1883 and constructed as a standard gauge railroad, reaching the summit of Trout Creek Pass in the 1890s. The differing rail gauges resulted in the construction of a bridge over the DSP&P’s existing line, as depicted in a painting by Howard Fogg. Both railroads were closed and scrapped by 1940.

Take highway 285 to the Park/Chaffee County line and turn into the parking area on the north side of the pass. The cache will be a short walk from your car. See if you can spot where the Colorado Midland used to cross over the DSP&P!

Unfortunately it appears this came was muggled but thank you to whoever at least replaced the container. This cache is in a really nice area. Today the road was quite muddy but that just gave me more of an excuse to stretch my legs as I slowly work my way home! Thanks for the hide!

I have rented a campervan for 24 days to go geocaching and exploring around the western part of the US, starting in Denver.

Today I drove from Woodland Park to Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP, spending the night in Montrose. Black Canyon was my main goal for the day, and I had never expected it to be sooo spectacular, I absolutely loved it!!! It’s winterseason now, so it was even free admission. It rained before I got there, but I was lucky and did not get wet. Lots of beautiful viewpoints in there, I ran out of time, so it got dark by the time I got out, 2 hours was not enough. I could spend the whole day enjoying these views. On my way to Black Canyon I focused on finding at least one geocache in every county, plus some geotourcaches, I guess thats why I ran out of time again...

Found as we headed over to Buena Vista after collecting our coin for finding 30 of the geo tour caches. We left the logsheet in a camoed pill bottle and cleaned up all the broken plastic. Left the lid with the code but wrote the code on the log sheet as well. Thanks
