Recommended for kids  Takes less than an hour  Scenic view  Abandoned mines  Abandoned Structure

A short hike to a cache in an area with beautiful views and interesting history.
My kids have been hassling me for years to hide our own cache and I think we might have finally found a good spot.   Enter through the gate and follow the old road. Take the second left. The first left is very faint. As you follow the second left the road will gradually fade away and you may have to go cross country while jumping some small streams.  This area is a mix of BLM land and an old ranch owned by the city of Aurora. Once you find the cache go about 30 meters west to see an old safe that has been shot full of bullet holes.  You don't need to cross the fence closing the old buildings to the public

For more info on the Hallenbeck ranch and Derry mine go to History Colorado.

The cache is a large plastic box with lots of stuff for kids
7/5/12-added parking area I meant to include in the first place-sorry. I'll recheck coordinates

Took a long time to find a way into this area. There were no trespassing signs all over the place and I was reluctant at first to go after it. However, many others had found it so why not. The cover to the box is broken and no longer locks, but it fits and is under cover so should be OK for now. TFTF

Found this gorgeous place with some old friends and their kids. The mountains and fields made me burst into song like Maria of The Sound of Music. Everything in good shape and lots of goodies for kids.

If the grass is high, you'll be more comfortable in long pants. If it's rained recently, you may want to wear shoes that can get muddy. We had grass but not mud when we went.

Well it was way harder than I think it should have been due to a very wet winter/spring and recent heavy rainfall which turned creeks into rushing rivers and marsh into swamp. Several detours took extra time. Would have been easier to approach from 24 but we made it! Amazing site. Cache is in good shape. Left coin, took pin. Signed log. Faved. TFTC!

Gates were locked, so I felt like I was trespassing. But we enjoyed the valley and views.
