Boat  Recommended for kids  Scenic view  May require wading  Camping available

Eagle Island Cache is the first cache hidden by team Awesome Eagles, and #1 in our series of tiny island caches. We have been exploring Lake Dillon by Canoe the past few summers, and have made stops on number of the small islands. This particular island should give you a great view of a bald eagles nest, and its inhabitants.

This is a little plastic box hidden on a small island in Lake Dillon. Should be an easy find once you get to the island. A boat is required. Easily accessable from Heaton Bay Campground or Frisco Marina.

On the evening when we hid this cache, we were reminded of the dangers of boating. Some other folks nearby accidently capsized their canoe on open water, while the sun went down and temperatures dropped. Luckily, we were able to help them to shore, and everyone was fine. Please always wear a lifevest and carry a whistle.

Water level was extremely low but for a different reason then last year - they’re expecting major snow let runoff in the upcoming weeks due to last seasons epic snowfall. So instead of kayaking out to this one we made the trek from Heaton Bay campground. Should be able to paddle out to this in 3-4 weeks based on reports. Saw an elk standing in the middle of the dry lakebed - quite an unusual sight. No eagle nesting this year. TFTC!!

After doing this cache by foot, due to the drought, I feel it might have been easier waiting until spring and boating. TFTC

Woo Hoo! I am so glad to finally get this one. I walked out just to see if a land bridge was open. Problem was it was just before sunset. I was thrilled to see the island was accessible but it wasn't going to be easy. I debated but headed out anyway. I finally got to GZ and started looking. It was dark enough now that I had to use my phone light to finally find the cache. So now it is dusk & I start heading back. At least there is a 1/2 moon but I ended up going back to the phone light until it died. But I remembered I have a light on my spare phone battery & it was just enough to get me back to my car.
