Once I found no 2, I found a nice trail to no. 3. So pretty up here, even on a snow/sun/cloud/rain day. Cache was visible/ not covered and on the ground. I am not sure that was the intent of the CO, but it worked for me. Tabbed the log to "sign"- my pen is still AWOL. Will have to return another day for more hiking and nos. 4 and 5- weather and impending darkness say it is time to get the solo hiker down to la voiture.

I picked this one up while in the local area during the end of the June transition month for what I called the "Freeze and Fry Run"...snivel cold at night and in the morning, sun beating hot in the afternoon. I had to go to Cortez, CO to pick up some old friends from New Jersey to act as their tour guide while enroute to DIA. Of course, I was trying to hike and pick up a few caches before they arrived. I decided to give this series a try because it looked fun, had decent D/T ratings, and was within "striking distance" after having to recover from a dead battery in my Xterra in the first half of the day. Despite some of the log entries, I really didn't think this was too intense a hike. Lucky for me, the late start was a bonus as the mountains offered shade and some much needed protection from the sun.
I had trouble making the find on this one. I was convinced I was getting poor reception here. The GPS took me to a spot off the trail, into some pretty thick vegetation. Despite a intense and lengthy search, I came up empty. My gut told me that I wasn't in the right area as I suspected the vegetation was masking part of the signal. Even if I was in the right spot, it could be hanging 6" in front of my face and I could still miss it. The normal technique of just expanding the search radius really wouldn't work here, although I bushwhacked out the best I could. I really didn't want to take a DNF on this one since my caching day was cut short, but I had to move on.
On the way back down, I had intended to pass this one up so that I had enough daylight to find some other caches. I decided to take another stab and tried again. Sure enough, the GPS took me to a totally different spot about 25 - 30 feet away from where I had searched previously. I soon had the container in hand. While I was very happy to have made the find, it is always disheartening to be reminded that sometimes effort and experience doesn't matter...sometimes the cards are against you and you may have luck or not. Thanks to the CO for placing this nice cache for everyone to find, TFTC.
