The Old Man and the Sea is a novel published in 1952 by the American author Ernest Hemingway. Although he developed the basic plot as early as 1936, it was written in 1951 and was his last major work prior to his suicide in 1961. Although his last , The Old Man and the Sea is his most famous work. The book centers upon Santiago, an aging fisherman who struggles to catch, then return home with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. The novel was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953 and helped Hemmingway earn a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. The novel not only served to reinvigorate Hemingway's literary reputation, but its success prompted a reexamination of his entire body of work. Since its first publication, the book is a staple of secondary education literary analysis around the world and continues to earn significant royalties in the United States and abroad.

The Old Man and the Sea has been adapted for the screen three times: a 1958 film starring Spencer Tracy, a 1990 miniseries starring Anthony Quinn, and a 1999 animated short film. To this day, the 1958 version is the considered the most literal, word-for-word rendition of a book to the screen ever filmed.

Proceed to the posted coordinates where some non-traditional techniques will be required to find, handle, and recover a non-traditional container. BYOP.

The GZ is located within the Blodgett Peak Open Space near a little used secondary trail. Please properly prepare for terrain and weather conditions typical for this part of the Rocky Mountains. Note the listed attributes. Due to safety concerns, the cache is not recommended during periods of snow and ice.

The cache is marked as a "Premium Member Only cache," as there is a requirement to expend a minimal amount of effort to properly reset the cache for the next person. I assume that Premium Members have the personal discipline and will make that effort. If you are not willing to do so, I request that you pass on this geocache.

Since a number of local cachers have made multiple trips to Blodgett Peak Open Space, the intent was to provide something worthy of your time to return. Enjoy the hike and hunt.

Another attempt with some added information and the cache was found. Glad I was able to make it up here to get the smiley. Another nice container! TFTC!

It was quite a hike up to this location. I got there after about 4 hours of uphill at a very slow pace. It's how I do...

Once I got there I was looking around and finally decided to ask the CO for help. I was in the wrong spot. Once I got to the right spot and looked around, I asked again. But the wind was picking up and I'm more partial to my safety than a smiley. Since I was alone, I decided to abort and head back down. I was also running out of time to get to the planned BBQ. I knew it wouldn't take as long to get down, but I didn't count on finding a cliff that would need navigating around... THat brought me back up and I found myself back on the same deer trail I was following for a bit on the way up. I knew the terrain from there, so I followed the ridgeline back down to Jacob's Ladder and then back to the trail.

Overall a crap ton of great exercise for two finds and a DNF. On way down I vowed, I'd never do this again and I spent most of today (Monday) noting that to others. But now that I'm logging it. I think I had too much fun in the woods, playing mountain man to not give it another go...

Some day...

Repairs completed and parts upgraded to deter future acts of vandalism.

A geocacher, and it was a geocacher; vandalized this cache. The hide concept was changed and custom components were replaced with cheap material that was not holding up in this location. This behavior is so disrespectful that this person should not be geocaching.

Time and material for repairs have now brought the cost of this geocache to 21 hours of preparation and $89 in parts. I highlight these figures for the next person who may consider doing something similar.

For the 99% of cachers that consistently do the right thing, the cache is ready for your visit.

I have received reports that a geocacher has already been either "modifying" or vandalizing the cache. I will be heading out the morning of 7.13.2017 to assess and make repairs.

Until then, the cache is technically findable, but I can't guarantee the quality of the experience.
