The Old Man and the Sea is his most famous work. The book centers upon Santiago, an aging fisherman who struggles to catch, then return home with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. The novel was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953 and helped Hemmingway earn a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. The novel not only served to reinvigorate Hemingway's literary reputation, but its success prompted a reexamination of his entire body of work. Since its first publication, the book is a staple of secondary education literary analysis around the world and continues to earn significant royalties in the United States and abroad.
The Old Man and the Sea has been adapted for the screen three times: a 1958 film starring Spencer Tracy, a 1990 miniseries starring Anthony Quinn, and a 1999 animated short film. To this day, the 1958 version is the considered the most literal, word-for-word rendition of a book to the screen ever filmed.
