THE STORY OF GEO. CASH

It was time to leave. George Cash had quit his job at Washington Industries Incorporated in Buffalo and sold his house at 38 N Parallel, Boston, NY. George had lived in this house all his life as his parents had bought it the year his older sister was born, and the two siblings had inherited it when their parents passed away three years ago. The only time in his life when he had been away was the four years he spent at the University of Rochester, but this was only a two hour drive away, so he spent many weekends at home.

His friend and neighbor Roger, who had recently introduced George to geocaching, along with his three other caching buddies had bought George a one year's premium membership as a going away present, and his boss Mr. Washington (owner of WII) and his co-workers had chipped in to get him a new Garmin Legend HCx. So George hit the road in his six year old Subaru, which he had bought used four years ago, planning to geocache on his way to his new home.

George's father had told him that they were distantly related to Johnny Cash (though George preferred to think of the relationship as much closer and liked to refer to "my cousin, Johnny Cash," not explaining that it was necessary to go back four generations to find a real connection.) George always had his iPod loaded with all of the legendary country singer's songs and was singing along with "Ring of Fire" as he drove away.

George traveled west on State Highway 249 to pick up Interstate 90; he and his geobuds had found pretty much all the caches in western New York state that were along his route, so he made only one stop before entering Pennsylvania. Each of his buddies had sent a new Travel Bug along on his trip and had instructed him to drop each one in a different state and George had a new one of his own as well, so he stopped at GC1FC49 "There was a Boy" to drop his to commemorate his life in New York. He found the cache easily and enjoyed the bit of history at the location.

Interstate 90 extends less than 50 miles in Pennsylvania, so George stopped at the first cache that he knew would be large enough to hold the Travel Bug he was supposed to drop in that state, GC1D40R "New Stateline Cache." He found a Travel Bug in the cache, which he took to move along. There was another cache very close by, so George went to look for it, too; this was GC1XGXE "Truck Stop Micro," but without having his geobuds around to help, he couldn't find this one.

George's next stop was for GC1J6ZG "Coffee in the woods" and GCKCRB "Fish Sticks." He found both of these easily and took the TB that was in "Coffee in the woods." He didn't stop again until he was in Ohio, at GCAE2F "A Restful Stop in Ohio!" Here he dropped the TB that his friend Matt had wanted him to leave in that state, although he would be spending the rest of the day and much of the next in Ohio, he didn't want to take any chances of not being able to fulfill his friend's wishes.

George then drove for a while without stopping again until he had reached the turnoff from I 90 to I 271 when he decided it would be a good time to get lunch and fill the gas tank.

After lunch George decided he could use a bit of exercise so he went to look for three caches in Mayfield, parking near GC1GPX7 "Mayfield Heights Travel Bug Depot." After he found that cache, he walked to GC26KZE "Stick and Rock" and then to GC15557 "Mayfield Village Wetlands." He then walked back to his car and got back on I 271 and continued his drive.

His next stop was near Medina, for GC1G595 "Allardale Rocks" and GC105J0 "Aidan's Geojufari," both were in nice little park areas and he enjoyed looking for them. This was where I 271 ended and his route took him on I 71. Next he made quick finds of GC186WG "EXIT TO NOWHERE" and GC27MA3 "Welcome to Morrow," both of which were just at exits off the interstate.

Approaching Columbus, where he planned to spend the night, George stopped to hunt three more caches before calling it a day.

GC12MZR "Mitchell's Hitchhiker Hotel" -- As this cache is only available during the hours that the nearby business is open, he was glad that he arrived in time to find it.

GC403 "Creaking Tree, Hidden Cache" -- Originally hidden 03/05/01, this is the oldest cache George has found.

GC1RF2M "Split Decision" -- He enjoyed the walk to this one and thought it was a nice way to end the day.

After checking in at a motel and getting something to eat, George spent some time that evening logging his day's caching activities.

In the morning, George decided to get out of the busy city traffic before he stopped, so his first cache of the day was GC1Q4NX "Y Knot Again?" He had to look for a while and almost thought he was spending too much time on one cache with a long drive ahead of him that day, but when he finally found it he thought it was one of the most interesting caches he had found and worth taking the extra time.

George's next stop was for GCWZX7 "One Degree of Separation - bennet - Seed Pod #1." Here he dropped the two trackables that he had picked up the day before and took the two that were in the cache.

Next he stopped at the Collett Woods Nature Preserve to get the two caches there, GC16MM9 "Collett Woods" and GC1G55G "Clinton County Parks: Collett Woods NP."

A couple rest area stops were next. GCGCBX "Scenic Rest on I-71 South" provided a nice walk and a beautiful view, and GCGJ4N "Do or DIE on 71 EYE" was a quick find and back on the road.

Approaching Cincinnati, George decided to bypass the metro area and not make any more stops until he was well into Kentucky. His next stop was just past where he left I 71 to take I 75, at GCZ1YV "Hiking Biker" where he dropped the Travel Bug his friend Tony wanted to be left in Kentucky, and then walked to GCVX19 "Dead Man's Chest."

At Lexington, George was ready for a lunch and gas stop so he found the restaurant mentioned in the description of GC12D0N "Where Do We Go Next?" then found the cache and gassed up his car. He then drove until he reached GC1DYG9 " Durbin's Truckstop Memorial" which he found easily. His next stop was in Richmond, where he found two caches, GC1NCKA "Shibuya 107" and GC1G73P "Richmond's Geocoin Hideout.'

Just one more stop for the day, this was GC19EBD "Butterfly TB Motel" and then he soon reached his turnoff from I 75 to KY Hwy 9006 which he took to US Hwy 421 which would bring him to his destination for the night.

After two days on the road, George reached the home of his sister Irene, her husband Frank, and their two sons Jason, age nine, and Jacob, age seven, at 104 W Meridian, Helton, KY. After a delicious meal and a good night's sleep, George wanted to take his two nephews out for a day of geocaching.

Over breakfast, they planned their adventure, bookmarking the caches they wanted to hunt; then while Irene fixed lunches for the three cachers, George created the Pocket Query and loaded the waypoints into his Garmin, and the boys looked through their toy boxes for some trade items. George had told them to find some small toys that they didn't want anymore, but were still good enough that other kids might like to have them. Everything ready, they set off on their expedition.

GC23PJX "the gap" was their first stop. George didn't have any trouble spotting the hiding place, but he let the boys hunt for a while, until Jason found it. They looked through the contents and made some trades; George left one of the Travel Bugs he had picked up the day before.

Then they drove on to GC189A5 "Caching in Laurel." This time Jason found the cache before George was even out of the car. The boys made their trades and George left the other Travel Bug. The next two caches provided fun hunts for the three, but they didn't make any trades at these: GC1H6AM "County Line" and GCYVAN "Hanging Around."

The next stop was at GCYVAD "Elk Viewing"; after finding the cache and making some trades, the trio sat at this scenic area to eat their lunch. Then they headed for their next stop, GC1587G "I "WONDER" Where All Those Rocks Are Going" which they had fun hunting for, but didn't make any trades. This was true also of the next cache, GC13QYM "County line (Harlan County Rocks)."

Although they wouldn't admit it, George could tell that the boys were getting tired, and they were a bit disappointed that the latest caches didn't have as many trading opportunities as some of the earlier ones had. For his part, George was getting tired of driving, so he decided it was time to head home.

George stayed at his sister's home through the weekend and on Monday morning he started out on the next stage of his journey.

Congratulations to kyotmoon for the FTF.

Parents are here visiting so we decided to take today to cache a bit! Found with Parentsof4Ks. This was a nice walk! We were a little concerned about the creek on the map, but it turned out to be dry. Tftc.

Solved a bunch of mystery caches at home before heading for Pueblo and our daughter's place. Even tho this cache hadn't been found since 2015 we didn't let it deter us from going after it.
