For 52 years the Royal Gorge Scenic Railway operated a miniature train that ferried visitors from the parking area to Point Alta Vista. There they were treated to a spectacular view of the Royal Gorge. The railroad closed down in 2012, and the property was sold. For several years the only access to Point Alta Vista was via the much longer and more difficult Made in the Shade and One Track Mind trails. Eventually construction was begun on a trail that follows the old rail bed. Some of the original trestles remain, and several were built or rebuilt for the foot trail. Today Point Alta Vista is again available to those who hike the easy one-mile trail.
The trail begins at the parking waypoint. The well-maintained trail is mostly level with a few gentle hills. The trail goes through private property so please stay on the trail. There is little shade until you get to the covered pavilion at Point Alta Vista so wear appropriate clothing and bring enough water.
