Despite its less than appealing name, Black Dumps is a scenic location where you can enjoy views of Bassam Park and enjoy the remote solitude found in this area. Legend has it that Black Dumps was so named because of a coal deposit that was briefly mined here. This cache will take you by a few shallow holes in the ground, known as prospect pits, which are all that remain of the brief mining operations in this area. South Park's landscape is dotted by hundreds of these prospect pits, both on high mountain peaks and forested areas such as this one.

The best access to this cache is via Chaffee County Road 307, which can be accessed from highway 285 west of Trout Creek Pass. Take CR 307 to CR 187 and stay on the road for approximately 8 miles. Park at Black Dumps where the road intersects with Forest Service Roads 186 and 188. A foot path runs from the parking area past the prospect pits and will lead you to the cache.

Thank you for the cach. Found it in good condition while horseback riding with Elk Mountain Ranch. Had picnic on the ridge further up the trail.

Hard to believe this one was accessible in early March. The road up was dry and smooth, and we only had to avoid a few thin snow patches on the walk to the cache. The CSP series is great. TFTC

Thxs for another SouthPark geo tour cache. SL. all is well at this location. Don't think I've ever seen a pencil sharpener in a cache but good idea. Always carry a pen w/me.
