These birds require a great deal of effort to become airborne, pedaling across the water with their feet before lifting off. The way in which their heads bob when they walk or swim has earned them the name "marsh hen"or "mud hen". These birds are frequently seen swimming in open water. They can dive for food but can also forage on land. American Coots are omnivorous, eating plant material, arthropods, fish, and other aquatic animals. They nest in a well-concealed location in tall reeds.

Looked for this one after DNFing another down the path. I would have missed this one if not for George's eagle eye.
Late start today. We played poker too long last night and couldn't drag ourselves out of bed at a proper time. After Brunch with our daughter we headed west to find a few caches. But just one cache in and out plans changed. We headed north to have dinner with 2lablovers. Afterward we searched for a cache (DNF) together and then wandered further down the path for another.
I'm on the road to recovery from my caching addition. Who am I kidding? I'm on the road to another cache. Thanks for this one!

Out geocaching with LASouthpaw today, finding caches in the Commerce City area. We parked at various trail heads, wandered around a bit, and had some pretty good luck with finds, and only one DNF.
There is some disturbance around GZ and a couple of DNFs so we added a replacement cache. Thanks for the fun along the trail.

I haven't been out caching much, so I was super happy to be out and about with FayColSalTom today. We cached our way through some of the more industrial areas of town. We read ahead and brought some containers and logs just in case. I was prepared for a hard day, but we did much better than I expected. The weather was nice for us, as we were finishing up a cold wind whipped up. A sign it was time to head home, I guess. Looks like GZ has been removed recently, and it was likely removed/moved while this was going on. We opted to drop a replacement in a spot that matched the hint. Thanks for the smiley!

Finally! A find! I have just had a few DNFs so far. But it's a nice day for a masked ride on the geocycle. Learning about birds to boot. I didn't know anything about American Coots. TFTC.

Out with NTM this afternoon grabbing caches. We took on about 5.5 miles total and found 9/12 caches. There was still a good amount of snow on the grab, but that did not affect us for the most part. Thanks for all the caches.

The baggie hold in the log book has seen better days, but otherwise the cache is in decent shape.

After some shopping at Bass Pro Shops on my day off from work, I decided to tote along my bike for some riding and caching afterwards. I rode about twelve miles and grabbed a dozen or so caches. Not too many muggles this afternoon, but definitely some shady people around here. TFTC!

Out enjoying the sunshine with the Geodoodle today. Had some finds and some DNFs, but still a good day! Quite a few other people out and about today, but no so many that it was crowded.

For some reason, the map on my GPS said this was in the middle of the water...fortunately the GPS was wrong on this one! Enjoyed the search for this one, thanks for placing it!

Found at 11:30 a.m., find no. 643.

Another fortunate grab on the DNF Power Trail with T&A137 and benj59. I believe T&A137 made the grab here, so we decided to keep him. Thanks for the fun hide.

T&A137 and FearTheFish and I were hitting what we dubbed the DNF Power Trail. Thankfully this ended up being one of our finds! I honestly can't remember which of us found this particular one. But I'm glad we did!

This took me too long. A nearby muggle had me nervous. Sadly had to CITO a few heroin needles. TFTC
