Located off Burning Bear Trail going up the south side of Guanella Pass from Grant. Placed on 1/18/03, terrain is basically easy though the last 100 yards are extremely steep. Elevation gain is approximately 270' from start of trail.
The Peregrine Falcons had 4 patrol members participate in the making and hiding of this cache. As such, there are a LOT of itmes in the 5 gallon white bucket. The beginning contents are:
5 Outside magazines
letter opener with built-in ruler
metal matchstick container
stuffed lizard
rope
cork coaster
Cub Scout patch from Magness Adventure Camp
sea shell
patriotic stickers
stuffed bear
klaidescope
pie bird
Peace Ring
Books - Hatchett, Brians Winter, Batman & Robin, Animorphs
Coors Field Pin
waterproof matches
Elks Lodge "free drink" coin
tea & cocoa

We planted this geocache today and it was very windy. Though there was barely much snow on the trail, the wind had blown it in areas to where it was about 10-11 inches deep. It wasn't a difficult wallk at all though it was cold. Weather should not impair anyone from finding this geocache. You will have a beautiful view from the place of the geocache.

 Hints

Off of Hwy 285 from Grant go up 5.3 miles on Guanella Pass Rd. Parking is at the trailhead for Abyss Trail. Walk back down road about 100 yards to Burning Bear trail (N 39 30.557 W 105 42.686 elevation 9564). Approx 1.3 mi go right over creek near some beaver ponds. Look for prominent rock outcropping. Climb up the hill to the outcropping and you are in the area. You should be at roughly 9838' elevation. PS - we hid this in winter when crossing the FROZEN beaver ponds was no big deal, in the warmer months an easier way to cross over from the trail is to go just a little further (100 ft ?) up the trail and cross over a log bridge then come in to the cache from above.

Old cache? Large? Count me in!

Grabbed with Bhob while hiking in the area towards my 10,000th geocache. Ended up doing seven miles, great day and only rained on a few times.

Cache in great shape. Thanks for keeping this one active. D/T combo is funny, the good old days...

Thanks Steven, Kyle, Brandon. Collin! Logged The Nest from a ninth galaxy using c:geo!

We hiked to this one to check on it. I carried a replacement 5-gallon bucket all the way there and back. All is well here. Cache on.

Great hike in scenic surroundings. The cache was a bit of a climb, but easy to find. The insides are still warm and dry, and the view's still amazing.

I have adopted this cache. I replaced the logbook in July and added a small inner container to the larger outer container. I also removed the moldy original log and will eventually scan and post the pages that are readable. It is ready to be found.

I should note that the terrain is probably not 1.5 even by Colorado standards. The final 100 feet are up. The total hike is about 3 miles. But I'm not changing the terrain rating.

The beaver ponds no longer exist. When you get to the Y in the trail, you can go right and I think you will get to the cache; I did that once many years ago. I usually go left at the Y for a more woody hike and cross at the log bridge. I placed a cache near that bridge as a guide.

David and I hiked out here. Lots of mosquitoes and biting flies. I did not bring up a new huge container; I didn't find one with a screw-on lid that would be easy to open and close securely. Added a fresh small log book and put it and smaller dry items in a sealed container inside the larger container which wasn't all that wet. I took the very wet original log book and will dry and photograph as many pages as I can. The new log book I added four years ago was gone. Thank you for my favorite cache.

Fun hike up to this one.

The insides were wet so I layed everything out in the sun to dry and I took in the view while having a snack.

I can imagine all the snow back in here over winter could make anything leak.

Thanks for keeping this oldie going!

I live in Pennsylvania, but I did the most recent container replacement. When I am back in Colorado this summer, I'll bring up a new container that has holes in the bottom to allow the water to drain and an inner waterproof container along with a new log. Someone else is welcome to do that. I'm not the cache owner. This is merely my favorite cache.

Thank you for placing this large cache. I had a good day caching with OneKindWord after the mega event. We found 7 large caches all over the Denver area today.

What a hike! Stunning with all the fall colors, and a great hike indeed. Hiked through the beaver ponds, and straigt up the hill, but we made it! Container is still soggy, but lots of cachers (including us) have left behind ziplock bags for swag, maybe someone should empty the ruined stuff. We took two friendship knots and left behind a handful of ducks and a thumbdrive. Thanks for the cache! - CachingNashs

The lid seemed to be sealed, but there was lots of water inside. I poured out what I could. The log is wet and moldy. Many of the items are moldy, too. This container may need to be sealed with a hammer and opened with a screwdriver. I realize that is not practical, but perhaps another waterproof container inside would solve the problem. It is such a great cache. I hope you can fix it.

I LOVE this cache! I love where you placed it and enjoyed getting up there to find it. Since I could see the road from there, we bushwhacked on the way back. I will also write a maintenance note. Although the container seemed to be sealed, there were a few inches of water inside. The log is moldy as are many of the items. I was able to sign it. This is such a wonderful cache, so I hope you can maintain it. Thanks again for the wonderful cache. I will make it a favorite!

I spent 12 dqys in Colorado to include travel to and from. I cached with Hockabee, LouinLiberty, FWIA, Harvest Moon2, Gnome Cats, 5 beads. Signed the logs 5CG (five crazy girls) GC, and the general and wife. What a wild time we had.
